Check those dates ... It was the MOST dangerous time in all of Military History.

I spent twenty three years in the USAF.

After Basic Training, and Medical Service Fundamentals at Sheppard AFB, I went to Travis AFB for 5 1/2 years (1973-1978), then went to Andrews AFB for about 2 1/2 years (1978-1981). Went to Sheppard AFB for approx 4 years (1981-1985), then spent a year (1986)at the USAF Academy, where I completed my Physician Assistant training. Went to Chanute AFB (used to be located in Rantoul, IL), where I spent a little over 5 years (1986-1991). After I left there, they closed the base!

Went to Wright-Patterson AFB, where I completed a post-graduate physician assistant residency in Orthopedic Surgery(1991-1992), then went to Langley AFB. Spent three years there (1992-1995), and retired.

Now I reside in Springfield, MO, where I thoroughly enjoy riding in and around the Ozark hills.

I entered the Air Force during Vietnam, so have a NDSM for Vietnam. I also have one for Desert Storm, since I was still on active duty during that activity. During my career, I had the distinction of being the highest paid 2nd Lieutenant on base, as I had thirteen years active duty as an enlisted member, at which time I received my commission.

I received two Air Force Training Ribbons, two Small Arms Expert Marksmanship ribbons (M16 and .45), four Good Conduct medals (for my time as an enlisted member - officers are naturally gifted with good conduct, whereas enlisted members are rewarded with a medal for same).

Additionally, I earned three AF commendation medals, two Meritorious Service Medals, one Presidential Unit Citation.

Beyond that, I was never deployed or assigned outside CONUS - probably something that is unlikely in today's military. Proud to have served!

I got an invitational letter from the President in 1968 to join the Army and joined the Air force instead.
I served 3 years, 9 months, 8 days and about 10 hours active duty USAF. I worked in the Information office as journalist. I wrote for and edited two base newspapers at:

Sewart AFB in Smyrna Tenn. 1969-70 and
England AFB in Alexandria LA. 1970-72

I look back on it very fondly.

My dad flew B-17's in WWII, got a Purple Heart, and was career USAF.

Oh ya, I remember a lot of things that happened to so many people in the military. However, we still had our interservice and intraservice rivalry. I wouldn't change that for the world. Hope the PC police don't try to change it either.

My good buddy and best man at my wedding 23 yrs ago put his papers in last year after 28 years also. He went LDO as well... From Seaman Recruit to LCDR....

Another good friend (retired CPO) wife just submitted her papers this weekend after doing her points for 20 years time in the Reserves...another CPO...although she will not get her money until 60 yo...

I found a friend I was stationed with back when I was a young buck (30 years ago) using ( buddy finder...It took awhile, but a reunion was in the mix I found out and the organizer had my buddy's email. Got hold of my buddy and he had emails from other friends at that time....Reunion is in June and the "gang" will be together again. I found out that 3 of them either went 20 years or longer. :D

6 years I served as a mechanic on C-141s, B-52s, and KC-135s. While in Thailand, I also worked as a Customs inspector for about 9 months. We inspected aircraft headed back to the states looking for drugs and contraband. Excellent job.

On my return to the states from Thailand, I decided I diden't want ot be a mechanic for 20 years, so I cross-trained into Flight Engineer duty. The remaining years was flying and I loved it. I was thrilled to retire May of 89 and start teaching Northwest Airline pilots. I'm close to a second
retirement and I can't wait.

I had to come back and edit this posting. It appears I posted before, but it's so old I forgot. I suppose that "forgetting" comes with the territory.

Yes Ray....

I think it's a need to continue the 'Adventures' in life....and Motorcycling of any sort seems to provide that.

Is there a connection between Goldwings and military personnel? this post has one of the most viewed and most posted in a long time. Glad we all have something in common. Must be the travels we do in our career and we just carry over in our personal life.

Thanks my friend.

USA and Australian Military have shared much over the last 70 or so years, and still working together in Afghanistan etc.

Certainly 'feel' like 'Brothers in Arms' and was great to Visit DC on a Ride there in '09.

Was 'hosted' by a group of mainly Vietnam Vets out of Wisconsin....I will never forget that!

Eight years and a day 71-79 in USN. Most of my sea time (including 2.5 years total underwater) spent on USS Von Steuben SSBN 632 Blue crew homeported in Charleston, SC but doing most patrols and refits in Holy Lock, Scotland. Did two "ERP" patrols that involved a mini-shipyard period in the drydock in Holy Lock before the strategic deterrent patrol.

When I got out was a Machinist Mate First (SS) selected for CPO.

Did a couple years in reserve unit in Knoxville, TN but they didn't like that I worked shift work and couldn't drill on their desired weekend, so I quit that (hated the reserves anyway - all the military BS without the satisfaction of the job).
