Howdy from Arizona.

Barrett-Jackson Auction is in Scottsdale this week and also on Speed TV...
Whoohoo! I got to go see the 2nd night of the auction tonight....

Lots of classic cars w/blue light dots in their taillights. They are so cool looking.

So...that raised the question. Has anyone put blue dots in their upper taillights on their Wings? If so, any pictures?

is it even legal?

Okay, I'm dating myself now. When I was a vehicle safety inspector in Texas in the early 70's, one of the inspections was the tailights. We had to verify the light was red, no cracks or other imperfections that allowed white light to show, no tape, etc. If the color was other than red, it was a failure.

So my question is - would the blue dot even be legal? Disregarding the fact that I've seen a bunch of items on various vehicles that isn't (overwide tires sticking out, etc) and you probably wouldn't get cited for the dots, the point remains - is it legal? Need a current LEO to answer that one.

Personnally, I just think it's another bit of bling that I have no desire for.

I think they are really cool. Sure like to have one of the cars they are fastened to.

Legality of blue dot lenses can vary by state so it is best to check with your state officials. For example, in Pennsylvania, a new law was enacted in 2006 specifically for motorcycles and allows blue dot lenses and led lights. I keep a copy in the trunk in case I get stopped because of the extra lighting I installed on the wing. This of course applies only to Pennsylvania. Below is the section from the Pennsylvania Title 75 Vehicle Code:

§ 4310. Motorcycle lighting.
Auxiliary lighting may be added to a motorcycle to protect the driver, including blue dot illumination, standard bulb running lights and light-emitting diode (LED) pods and strips.

Blue dot tail light

Guy's, While I can't speek for other states, In Calif. it's unlawful. The only vehicle that is lawful in showing a blue light to the rear is a Police motorcycle. With the new higher traffic fines that's just been posted by Rocky last week and with the "write more, talk less. push that's been coming down on traffic officers. This would be sure to get you noticed.

Thanks very much.
While what you posted is obviously true and again would never see any reason to be bothering anyone for having blue dots.
However, since you are a LEO, you might want to check out the fact that Fed lighting laws as shown in FMVSS paragraph 108 overrides any states lighting laws!
Again, who cares really. I see no reason to bother anyone for lighting on a motorcyle.
Most people are well aware of what is emergency lighting and what is not!
Another post is talking about California LEO's tickering for having red air wings and mirror wings installed! Gotta be kidding me!

Read the statute.
As far as I know, they are still illegal in Texas. I have seen them on show bikes, but not alone on the back. I think it would be foolhardy to put blue or any other color than red on the back of anything. People are trained to look for the red and no one sees us anyway.

Police motors in AZ have a pair of blue lights facing toward the rear; believe there is also a small blue reflector as well.

Think you're aiming to be busted here as well.

Nevada permits blue dots on motorcycles only thanks to the efforts of the NNVCOC to get it included in the regs several years ago. Don't have a desire to do it to the Wing partly because if a mistake was made during the install, the lamp housing is far more expensive to replace than a simple lens on another model bike.

NRS 486.261 Tail lamps.
1. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 3, every motorcycle or moped must be equipped with at least one tail lamp mounted on the rear, which, when lighted as required by NRS 486.011 to 486.381, inclusive, emits a red light plainly visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear.
2. The tail lamp must be wired to be lighted whenever the head lamp is lighted.
3. The tail lamp on a motorcycle may contain a blue insert that does not exceed 1 inch in diameter.
(Added to NRS by 1971, 1469; A 1975, 1083; 1991, 2232; 2003, 403)

Blue dots are cool, never thought about having them on the Wing. I wouldn't think the tail lamp lens would be waterproof after installing them though. As for the LAW, fluck them, that is just an over rated establishment for honest people!!!

In Georgia blue-dots in taillight or running lights are illegal. I had one on my last two Harley Davidson's, cause it went with the theam. I was not stoped though. I only have one blue dot left, but the wing has more lights than that, so it sits in my toolbox unused.
