Rattle in motor

I have an 08 that I bought new a year ago. When I picked it up the salesman told me before we started it that:

motor will "surge idle"
and there will be a rattling noise at idle until the motor warms up.

Both of those happen. I have 17500 miles now and the bike runs great. I think the "rattle" is the ADG but I met a guy who said his bike made no such noise. Anyone else's make this "rattle"?

I have an '08 and bought it new, no rattling here, but I have always used high test gas. You may have gotten some lower octane gas that causes the rattle. Hope you get your problem solved, let us know what you find!

I will try high octane gas, see if it helps. It does not do it when it warms up. I don't think it's valves as the rattle is not a "tap" or follow any pattern. I wonder how the salesman knew it would do that.

Rattle in Motor

A rattle until it warms up sounds like bearing rattling until the oil get warm enough to penitrate. I would get some kinda warrenty from them that the engine is not going to go south in a few thousand miles and they say OH well. The ADG rattle is really loud and does not go away when the engine warms up. Also some of thes bikes make a rattling noise from the throwout bearing, try pulling in on the clutch and see if the noise goes away

My 07 does both, but runs great 62,000KM.
I think that it is injector noise while the "surge idle"

My 09 makes the rattling noise at 38,000 miles when the bike is cold and had been sitting. After it warms up, no noise. I just took it to the dealer and they said that short of me paying to have the engine pulled I would have to wait until it gets worse. They said that the rattle, sounds like rocks in a clothes dryer, was very faint and did not know what it was. I am 99% sure it is the ADG but I have another year on the warranty so I will wait and see.

Bucfan11,

It sounds like this rattle is concerning you,as it would me as well. For peace of mind I would go to AutoZone and buy you a mechanic's stethoscope. They don't cost much at all. Simply fire the beast up, let it sit in your driveway idleing and start going over the engine with you shiny new stethoscope. In short time I guarantee you will be able to at least tell what part of the motor the rattle is coming from.
If your neighbors see you, they will now think you are important wearing a stethoscope too!
Sounds can transfer to different areas of the case so easily. This method will pinpoint the actual source. I am wondering if it is in fact your alternator? If it is the alt ,as soon as you put the stethoscope on it, it will proably about knock your eardrums out as it is probably the spur gear on the alt doing the chatter.
After you are done throw the stethoscope in your toolbox for using it later on other things.

My 09 does the exact same thing. I've wondered about it lately. I have slightly over 49,000 miles and don't remember this happening until around 45,000 or so. Keep me posted if you figure out what it is...I'll do the same.

I have this noise on both of my wings. Never worried about it.

Some Wings have a clutch rattle as the miles add up. I was told it is usually the clutch drum. Mine has had the rattle for quite a while at 194,000 miles but has never been a problem other than hearing it at idle.

Mine makes a ticking sound like the oil is low but the dealer told me it was normal noise from the injectors. Who knows if that is true.
I noticed mine doing just that yesterday. It has about 8,000 miles on it. I plan to take it to the dealer and let them listen just to be on record with them in case something happens down the road.

BTW, what the heck is "ADG"?

If the bike is under warranty, why would you have to pay to have it torn down. I would be calling Honda to tell them the dealer wants to charge you for warranty work.

That's ridiculous.

If they find something, the tear down wouldn't cost. But if nothing is wrong, why should Honda pay for it?

Dr Honda to the rescue

FIRST THING IN THE MORNING
START BIKE IN NEUTRAL
NO THROTTLE
LET WARM UP
WAIT FOR FAN TO COME ON
AFTER 20 SECONDS
TURN OFF
WAIT 4 MINUTES
Start up and ride--no more surging idle
