Any suggestions on where to purchase good quality JIS screwdrivers?

You can buy either the screwdrivers or just the bits here. I just purchased the bits because I have a screwdriver handle that accepts bits already.

I second the recommendation for cyclemax (Maintenance), although if you want free shipping, you need an order of $199 or more. I live about 30 miles from their store/headquarters and have been there many times. Gary and Betty who own it are great folks.

As far as the JIS screwdrivers, they are one of those things that once you use them you wonder how you ever did without them. They "lock" into a metric bike screw much, much better than a phillips.

The Harbor Freight $1.69 Phillips actually has a JIS grind on the tip. I have a few Vessel JIS screwdrivers and compaired the tips, and they’re identical. I bought 2 from Harbor Freight and they’ve held up well for a couple of years.

I researched the JIS for a few hours and "opinions" are most of them are fake, the company that made JIS stopped making them long ago and finally just grind down the tip of a Phillips and thats it. The grind down the tip seems like a solution so ...
I could be mistaken but I was under the impression that JIS was a standard and not a company per se.

I ordered 3 of those Vesel screwdrivers from Amazon on March 21, 4 weeks later they notified me that because of shipping issues the screwdrivers got returned, they wanted to know if I still wanted them and they would try shipping again, well they never arrived so in August I asked for my money back and they refunded it.

Yeah, I stopped in there too a couple years back on my way from touring the Northeast. Very friendly. And I can never just order one part on their site. I go on the web site with the intention of just getting the one part and before I know it I have a full order of stuff I "need". So I usually end up with the free shipping...

You never know if a given screwdriver is made JIS or not unless you try it, and even then most philips fit "pretty good", but not as good as a true JIS. The JIS standard has kind of gone away and most modern screwdrivers supposedly work, but I have a lot of screwdrivers from Snap On, Craftsman, Chinese bits Milwaukee, Dewalt, a nice Wera, ect. Vessel for sure fits better than any of these. Actually the Wera even though made in Japan was horrible. The others fit, but not as good as the Vessel. I have other things though that the Vessel fits like crap, and all the rest fit better, but only the Wera fit is perfect.
I would recommend the Vessel, or at least the Vessel bits. For sure the Vessel bits fit better than Milwaukee or Dewalt on a motorcycle at least.

The pictures a couple posts back show the difference pretty cleary, but unfortunately it's not quite that easy to spot the difference just by look. For sure if you have the longer pointy end it is not JIS (mainly pointy end will be found on older screwdrivers). Pretty much all modern screwdrivers are all shaped like the JIS picture, but results will vary wildly. Some fit no better than the old pointy ones, some fit perfect, most somewhere in between. Good enough to use most likely, but they won't fit as well as the Vessel.

I bought this set and am very happy to have spent the extra money for something that works incredibly well.

I like the fact that these have a cushion grip, as I can get a better hold on these than I can on a hard plastic handle.

The do not cam out of a screw, like a regular philips will.
They do not round out the screw like a regular philips will.

And as a bonus, they will work with regular philips screws, too.
I pretty much grab these for anything that looks like a philips screw.
Unless I plan to use a hammer on the opposite end of the screwdriver.....
