Hmmm... At that price ($140) I might have to try one! I can always 3D print spacer blocks as needed...

I had a friend that I told him if he purchased a Madstad and did not like it on his F6b I would give him his money back, once you ride behind it then you will understand what people are saying, and until then if you did not walk in a mile in a mans shoes you sure can't tell how well they fit..

Last night was my first opportunity to ride with the 18" Dark Gray Madstad in the dark. A combination of Interstate and rural farm roads, about 20 miles. The top of the shield was positioned a couple inches below my line of sight. The road and other traffic illuminated by my headlights were clearly visible through the Dark Gray shield. Never felt as though my view was restricted.

Only time I've had a forward visibility problem is pulling into my unlit garage with bright sunlight at my back. Had to stand up to confirm there was nothing lying on the garage floor directly in front of me. Entering the garage last night in the dark, I could see through the shield just fine.

The Choice of Clear, Light, Medium or Dark Gray shield tint depends on the color scheme of your bike and personal taste. Just wanted to convey that visibility through the Dark Gray is not an issue IMO. I do like how the Dark Gray tends to hide the shield mounting brackets.

How tall are you and was wondering the height difference from the stock when all the way in the down position.

Quoting from the Madstad Website:

"HOW TO MEASURE: While sitting on the bike run a measuring tape straight up from the top center of the dash. When the factory system is retracted all the way down, the top edge of our 18" shield will be 6 inches (15.2 cm) above that top of the dash, our 20" windshield will be 8 inches (20.3 cm) above that point and so on. You want the top edge of our shield to be at about your mouth level as you look straight ahead, so whichever measurement gives you that position, that is the size shield you would order. This ensures that you can see well over the top of the shield, but can raise it if necessary."

"Size and Color
While the Gold Wing electric system is height adjustable, we recommend starting with the appropriate shield size relative to rider height."

RIDER HEIGHTSHIELD SIZE
5'7" to 5'9" (170 - 175 cm)18" (300 mm)
5'10" to 6'0" (178 - 183 cm)20" (350 mm)
6'1" and taller (185+ cm)22" (400 mm)

I'm an average 6'-2" build and went with the 18" shield due to my previous experience with a Madstad on my F6B. Had I gone with the Madstad recommended 22" shield I would basically be riding with it in the "Full Down" position all the time so as to keep the shield out of my line of sight. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a height adjustable shield IMO. This is personal preference but to my eye a smaller shield looks better as well.

With the 18" shield "Full Down" there is very little air hitting my hands. When I raise the shield a couple inches for interstate speeds I start to get a bit more air on the hands but less wind to the torso and head. I've found when it's hot and in city traffic it's nice to run the 18" shield "Full Down" to get additional air to the rider at lower speeds.

Point being, there are potential advantages & disadvantages to shorter vs taller shield.

I’m wondering if just getting some spacers would benefit whatever windshield you’re running now…
The factory mounting brackets are canted outward to accommodate for the curvature of the shield. If you put spacers in, the holes in a stock shield will be too close together. You would have to elongate the holes, drill new holes or force it to fit causing binding of the height adjust mechanism.

I have the 22" clear madstad screen. I got out over the weekend to do some bonus chasing for Tour of Honor and PNWGT Friday (700 miles) and Saturday (500 miles). Encountered heavy head winds and some pretty severe cross winds with temps ranging 40-106 degrees. The shield was excellent. Dead calm behind the screen on the head winds with the screen all the way up. I lowered the screen to just see over the top of it. The wind noise went up slightly and the bugs and other stuff still went over the top of my helmet. This is the best windscreen I have ever bought on any bike I have ever owned. Exceeded my expectations. (my bike is heavily accessorized for LD Rally riding with pieces and supports that I made. Russell seat next week to finish setting up).

I see you did not remove the little wings on either side, would that be the case on all the mad stad windshields. Someone said while it is all the way down it interferes with the folded mirrors.
The wings don't interfere. The mirrors just touch the screen when folding. Not an issue for me.

Photo below is a stock Touring windshield with winglets. The width of the Madstad shield goes out past the stock winglets. Installing the Madstad does not require that you remove the winglets. I elected to remove the winglets just to clean up the look. Once you go to a wider aftermarket shield the winglets are not doing much IMO.

The mirrors will touch the Madstad in the "Full Down" position when folded back. Just raise the shield an inch or so and the mirrors fold back without touching for storage and transport.

@doug.crocker I typically don't like the color brown on vehicles or motorcycles, but every time I see a pic of your bike, I freaking love it! Very sharp. Congrats. And love the custom luggage rack too.
I appreciate the compliment.

I've never been a brown guy either but the combination of Brown & Black just works on this bike (a nice balance). I've only seen one other of this color in the wild and it was on the Interstate going in the opposite direction.
