I'm 6'-2" tall, 220 lbs with a 34" inseam. My passenger is 5'-4" tall. I Ride a 2018 DCT Goldwing (Non-Tour). I have ridden with the Factory Tour Shield, a 20" F4 Customs with Recruve and for the last 3 years a 20" Slipstreamer Wrap-Around. Up until purchasing the 18" Madstad, the Slipstreamer provided the best wind protection compared to the other shields mentioned above.
After 500 miles behind the Madstad, there is no doubt in my mind the Madstad performs better than any other shield I've used on the 2018. I had an 11" Madstad on my 2013 F6B with Baker under mirror wings and that was the best wind protection of any bike I had ridden. I think the 2018+ Madstad with Honda under mirror wings achieves the same level of wind protection for the Rider and Passenger.
The Madstad website suggests for my height (6'-2") a 22" shield. I ordered an 18" shield based on my previous experience with Madstad on the F6B. I've found the shorter shields work just fine. Full Down around town provides great wind protection. Get out on the interstate and simply raise the shield about 2". In both cases I'm looking well over the top of the shield
Photos on the Madstad website do not represent what I received. The shield I received was approximately 25.5" wide at its base and approximately 23" wide along the top. This is wider than the Slipstreamer while being 2" shorter. All good things IMO. I should note I've removed the Factory Winglets supplied from the factory (not really sure what these ever did).
Due to the Madstad's width, you get very good wind protection to the arms and shoulders which is appreciated when riding in cooler temperatures. I choose the Dark Gray tint which you can actually see through during daylight and at night with headlights.
Most importantly, my passenger noticed a reduction in wind turbulence at the passenger position. It doesn't totally eliminate wind at the passenger position but the wind is much less turbulent (No Buffeting).Taller passengers may have a different experience.
How is Madstad different form other shields ?? 1) Madstad provides a 1" spacer which is inserted between the backside of the shield and the factory mount. This allows for substantially increased airflow behind the shield lifting airflow up and over the rider & passenger. 2) To my knowledge this is the widest shield available for the 2018+ and provides very good wind protection to the arms and shoulders.
The Madstad kit is well thought out, simple and professionally implemented.
The 1" Madstad spacers installed between the back side of the shield and stock windshield mounts allow more air to flow up and behind the shield. Shield shown here in the "Full Down" position.
Shield in the "Full Down" position which provides good wind protection up to 50 mph. At interstate speeds I raise the shield 1-2 inches to maintain wind protection. Typically I would run the 20" Slipstreamer just below my line of sight. In comparison, I run the 18" Madstad well below my line of sight with better wind protection.
Madstad width extends out to about 1/4" of the mirrors on each side when in the "Full Down" position. This is the 18" Madstad which provides better wind protection than the 20" SlipStreamer it replaced. I removed the Factory Winglets years ago when I purchased the SlipStreamer and noticed no difference in wind protection.
