clock resetting it self and trip mileage

Have any of you ran into where the clock is resetting it self to 1:00 and the trip mileage every time the bike is shut down go to 0. I almost believe it is in the battery, it turns the bike kind of slow I kept resetting the clock and starting the bike and shutting it off, I hooked a charger to the battery and every thing was ok. While starting the bike several time it pulled the battery down and I just got the clicking when batteries are dead, few minutes later the battery charged back up.

Any good imput would be appreciated.

That was the first indication I had of a battery going south. On start-up, trip meter would reset, clock would reset, and the radio stations presets would go blank. Second time it did that, I had the battery load tested - it flunked. Put in a new one, problem gone. That was a 5 year old battery, but age is relative. New ones can go, also.

Like Fred said, time for a new one. The battery has warned you.

Everybody always blames the battery when the bike does not turn over fast enough or fails to start then they go out and spend hard earned money, bring home and install a new battery and when they do that more often than I would care to know they probably solve the real problem when they tighten the cables and wires. If the clock is resetting it sounds like a loose wire breaking contact for just a second and then making contact which resets the trip meter and clock. Before you spend the bucks check for loose wires and dont just wiggle them thighten the screws because a terminal can be loose enough to fail to conduct and not loose enough to wiggle.

Good luck

Dale, I did every thing that you suggested, I clean the terminals, tighten the bolts, charged the battery and started the bike 5 or 6 times and the battery pulled down, I got a new one this after noon. The one that was in it was only about 6 months old. I charged the new battery and installed it, started the bike several times and all seem to be ok. I will know more tomorrow when I take it out, I will let you guy's know if this was the problem or something else.

I appreciate every one input and Thank all of you

My Lady had that same problem with the clock resetting. This happened a few times in a month or so. Then one time returning home from a very long ride she pulled into the garage and said that her bike would not shut off. There was a lot of odd stuff happening, headlights not working normal, neutral light on with the switch off......... It was weird standing there with the key in my hand and the bike running. Spent a lot of time trouble shooting it and found a poor connection in one of the 2 large grey connectors in front of the left fairing pocket. The female pin was not fully inserted into the connector and had not been makeing a good connection for some time. It was a dark color, heat, and all the others were bright. The pin was one of two that supply the grounds to the front of the bike. Could not push the pin all the way into the connector so a jumper was run around the connector. That was about 2 years ago and it's been fine since. Her bike is a 2002 1800.

Ted,

I would be very interested in knowing what wire and pin you are referring to. I know of a couple other cases where bikes have continued to run after removing the key, and I wonder if you may have fingered the cause.

I just installed a new air-cleaner. at the same time I installed a switch to turn on my dead fans (Never found the problem so I bypassed it). Put everything together and found my clock & trip odometers re-set when the ignition is turned off. I have a 6 year old battery that just completed a 8,500 mile trip. Before I replace it I checked fuze 22 per REDWINGFAN's suggestion, sure enough it is blown. I blew the fan fuze installing my jumper and it must have taken out #22 also. Of course, being a man I took the entire bike apart to check all connectors BEFORE I searched the forum.

Once again this shows the value of the collective knowledge of the forum members. Next time I'll search BEFORE reaching for a screw-driver.

Hey all . Just purchased a used 05 with 85K+ miles.

Battery is on its last leg but also noticed that the clock and odometer reset overnight altho the bike still cranks up and starts. Radio still holds channels. Was told that battery was original and needed changing by seller. What is the best battery to get for the wing and where?
Thanks
michael
