I did a search on this and turned up nothing. I purchased an '06 with abs a few months ago. Since new it has a very noticeable shrill engine whine that's annoying a heck. It is directly related to engine speed. It has quieted down some, and isn't very noticeable when cruising around 55-60mph....but when you hit 3,000 + rpm's it gets louder and can be heard over the radio. The dealer assures me this is normal. They all do this to some degree and has heard worse. I tell him my '01 had no such noise and he tells me I had a quiet one. It almost sounds like an alternator whine. Anyone else have this and or possible remedy? Is my dealer just trying to avoid dealing with this?

I have an 06 with 5500 miles. I think the whine is normal alternator
noise. Mine has quieted down significantly since it was new, but I can
still hear it. I don't know what the deal is with the noisy alternators,
but I did a demo ride on an ST1300. It was worse than any Goldwing
that I have heard. Enjoy the bike. Either they quiet down or you just
get used to it. See Ya.

Here's a suggestion

I was told it was from the liquid cooled 1.2KW alt. "That's the way it is!" So, I put louder pipes on the bike and now it ain't so bad. And the bike sounds tough!

'wing whine

DrumScum:

..this is a link from another board member - open it up and
quite likely your wing also sounds like this

...I have an '-01 and it's probable that I've become more
aware of the whine, but it does seem as though my bike
is getting more louder...after listening to this links's engine
noise though, most wings are like this

I live close to Action and D & R's. I'm not impressed with Action. I got the bike from Cedar Creek. I like them better than Action even though same owner. I'm just coming up on 2k miles so I'm hoping it will continue to get better. D & R's tend to favor their clients when it comes to service appointments so I choose to not patronize them. Maybe I'll give Vetesniks a call and see what they say. Thanks for the advice.

I have no engine whine in my 02, at least none that is at all bothersome. Most whine in 1800's is from the transmission as you go through the gears, and is normal, and is virtually unheard at highway speed.

Ride safe.

Whine?

Mine kind of sounds like the car on "The Jetson's".

I think I'll name her "Elroy".

Maybe not.

Maybe she's just purring.

'wing whine`

...also, as a follow-up to my earlier post, this past weekend,
Sunday to be precise, my wife and I went for a casual jaunt
to Owen Sound, down to Southhampton and Port Elgin, (these
are small and quite picturesque towns that are very popular
with salmon/rainbow fishing)

...anyways, as we pulled into a local tim hortons for coffee,
there was a blue 30th anniversary 'wing; the owner came over
to ask about the kury foot boards and after that, I asked him to
start his '05 (being curious about the 'whine)

...well, I was so surprised to hear his 'wing didn't sound any
different than my '01 in regards to the alternator whine and he
said it's been like that since new; has less than 10,000 km's

..my wife said it sounded no different than our '01

...didn't make me feel any different or more accepting about
the whine but "misery loves company" as the saying goes

..and no, I'm not miserable...just quoting a "saying"

regards.....Ken

I have heard several similar complaints on the 06. They changed not only the alternator, but the alternator drive. My impression was the new damper in the drive was supposed to make it quieter, but it seems like it may have been to mask the increase noise of the new higher output alternator. It seems to be a common complaint.

I beleive the 06 alternator was bumped up to 1300 watt output
instead of 1100 watts on previous models. Not sure but may be
the cause of the louder whine you are hearing :?:
