ABS

I you look down on the sides of the front fender there is a chrome piece on the backside of the forks. If there is an ABS emblem there the bike has ABS.

just...

Get 'er up to speed on a slick surface and slam on the brakes!

j/k - don't do that. I believe you can also see the A designation in the model number on the VIN sticker.

Or turn the ignition on..an "A" will light up on the dashboard on the ABS version and will go out when you start to move the bike. Or look at either wheel at the hub..is there a toothed section about 4" in diameter on the right side? That's the trigger for the ABS sensor.

Ride long and safe..and ABS is the way to go, eh?

Look at your serial number a "474" is a ABS bike a "470"
is a standard. Both service manuals are the same.

The sure way to tell is turn on the ignition. If the ABS light on the dash glows, it's probably got ABS. Get it above 6 MPH and the ABS light should go out. ABS stickers can be faked, someone can mount a pulse ring and pickup on the wheels, etc., and it still may not be ABS.

If its raining today, Go for a little ride. Get going about 50 MPH. LOck down real hard on the brakes. If you skid you know its a non A model.

Look at the front wheel and see if it has the small diameter metal wheel that triggers the ABS.

Thank you for the info.

Will a manual for 2006 be close enough to be a good manual for my 2002?

The 06's had some changes. The manual fo the 05 contained all years from 01-05. I don't know if the '06 did the same or not.
Good Luck!

Get the 05 or earlier manual. The 06 manual has just the 06 and some 05 stuff. If you are getting the OEM version on CD, it is part number 61MCA04. 06 version is 61MCA50.
