The dash and the controls on the fairing and tank cover will look different also. Good catch on the 2010, you probably saved money over a 2012 and there is no real mechanical difference from recent reports. What color did you get? What options? did the dealer discount it?

The most significant improvement between the 2003 model and the 2010 model is the frame upgrade....no more worries about the rear triangle frame tube cracking behind the left passanger floorboard....the rest of the changes are really only added features.

Yes, discounted price. $18,999 vs. $17,000 for the '03.
Metallic Black. This is the audio/comfort. Seems that the improvements are considerable.
The only problem is that I have to go to Kansas to get it!

You'll enjoy the ride home. Recently, I bought a 2010 Wing in Oregon, then rode it back to Michigan, 3010 miles. The fly and ride is an excellent bonding experience with the bike. Congratsulations on your purchase.

In some ways, you'll have to follow the subtle changes over the years from 2003 to 2010. I posted a summary of GL1800 changes in this post some time ago. But, here it is again:
  • 2001 -- First GL1800 model -- Options: ABS; Accessories: Too numerous to mention.
    2002 -- Same as 2001
    2003 -- Same as 2001
2004 -- Same as 2001 except vented windshield, lighted handlebar controls
    2005 -- Same as 2004 except 30th Anniversary badges
2006 -- Same as 2004 except Euro style trunk and saddlebag lights, different dash, better sound system (6 speakers & amp), frame and radiator improvements -- Options: Heated Seats/Grips, GPS, ABS, Airbag; Accessories: more added.
    2007 -- Same as 2006
    2008 -- Same as 2006
    2009 -- Same as 2006 except Tire Pressure Monitoring System -- Options: XM Radio;
    2010 -- Same as 2009
2011 -- Model year was skipped; None produced.
2012 -- Same as 2009 except minor styling changes, added iPod/USB interface, "improved" suspension, seats & sound system, larger/redesigned saddlebags.
This is just a summary, so some design improvements may not be listed. I hope this helps.

Nice list and right on, except the frame upgrade was actually put into production in the late 2004 model and then in the full model production with the 2005 model.....the last year that the ABS option was a cheap bargain.

In addition to the difference in features, you will need a new service manual. Even though it is similar in appearance, the insides of the bike have changed significantly over those 7 years. The basic drivetrain and suspension are the same. But there are dozens of subtle changes in the design.

I agree ... get the service manual that matches the year of your bike. Aside from subtle mechanical differences, the wiring changes from year to year alone can get you into trouble.
