There's lots of talk about antiquated, outdated, defunct equipment regarding the 2018, like wired headsets and CB radios, for example. Lots of people saying get rid of the old crap and move on to new technology. I wonder if they will also throw out old, outdated, archaic maintenance traditions as well? No such thing as "break-in" oil anymore. That's gone the way of the CB!
Here's the new maintenance schedule for the all new 2018. I was already the first to post asking what the best oil would be so don't even go there! LOL!
I'm sure the oil wars will start up once winter PMS really sets in along with do I have to replace the three crush washers when I change out the oil on my wing with the DCT tranny and can I use something other than 80W hypoid gear oil in the final drive.>>
Guess I didn't see that oil post LOL. REALLY, what oil DO you recommend for the new wing? I have used Spectro Platinum Synthetic in my 2015 and changed it well before schedule called for. Motor hasn't so much as burbed, and the oil relatively clean when changed. I plan on sticking with it unless the book calls against it.
I recommend fresh, clean oil at the scheduled intervals: 4,000 - 12,000 - 20,000 - 28,000... by the book.
If you're going to use outdated 1970s maintenance traditions, you can't be giving people crap about wanting CB radios, good buddy. :thumbup: Over. <Roger Beep>
That’s what I was taught way back in highschool..... I never practiced it but have been thinking about it. It was my intention to check my manuals for all my stuff for this.
Manufacturers typically publish (owners manuals and the like) Maintenance Schedules with an eye towards how that publication might be used by a competitor with a potential customer. Specifically a sales argument that "our" product is less expensive to maintain than "their" product. The devil, as is usual, is in the details. Always be sure to read the admonitions and foot notes often provided with a Maintenance Schedule. Ex: "Service/replace more frequently when . . . ." IMHO the 2018 Owners Manual I've seen posted on-line appears to be a preliminary version. I'd recommend withholding judgments until the final hard copy version that is supplied with the bikes becomes available.
It's really not much different than the current one so I doubt it will change much, if at all. Plus, we've got 18 years of feedback on the current GL1800 from people doing recommended change intervals and some even going longer. Not a single issue. Facts over superstition.

Interesting..Final drive change for my 2005 is 2 yrs. New wing is 3 years. Could they have a different final drive design?? :surprise:
Coolant went to 3 years instead of 2 years.
Also my 2005 says oil filter every oil change, new wing is every other oil change.
Maybe after 17 years of the GL1800 out in the wild they realized that 2 years for the final drive and coolant was overkill. It probably is. And some people change it every 3,000 miles... with the oil... :roll:
Newer, more compact, clean, precision engine. Doesn't need frequent oil/filter changes. Modern technology is great! More ridin' less wrenchin'.
Amsoil has their "Synthetic Metric Motorcycle Oil." I bet before the end of the year they will have something like synthetic metric DCT motorcycle oil. >>
