i bought a 64 gb 3.0 usb sandisk from walmart and copied instructions from honda and have had several people including today a computer guy who has his own business attempt to format and down load as per instructions telling them that if they follow the instructions exactly it should work per comments on this forum.but my bike does not seem to recognize it when turned to the right twice after installing the usb first as per instructions.any help appreciated before i take it back to computer guy tomorrow. this of course is assuming he followed directions or his helper..

Had a semi similar problem with getting music to load from a usb. Found the solution to be the format of the usb drive. Don't recall the exact format but recall it being specified in the owner's manual - possibly hbsc - or something like that. The off the shelf usb want to format something different.

I’m not sure whether you are saying you’re having trouble copying the file to the flash drive or if your issue is with the bike reading the flash drive. Assuming your issue is with the bike reading the drive and installing the file on the bike I can only say don’t give up too soon and assume the flash drive isn’t being read. It takes a while before you will get an indication that it is working- not forever but give it a minute or so before assuming it failed to read the file.

Download to the computer's hard drive, then copy to the USB stick. And have different USB stick on hand. There are numerous posts about one stick not working, but another one does. There is no rhyme or reason to it.

And, make sure it is the ONLY file on the stick. And, of course, make sure the stick is formatted correctly.

How long are you waiting after turning the bike on? It can take almost a full minute or more before it sees the update.
I second this...it requires a little patience for the bike to recognize the drive. Remember it's recomended that you also leave your bike on a battery tender for this process.

I used a UUO stick in 16 gig and bought it at Walmart. It worked the first try . Might give it a try.

I too had problems. Make sure you have no files on the drive and also make sure you have no old updates files/or new on your computer. This will change the name of the file being downloaded. As per instructions it has to be the name in the instructions to work.

I LEAVE IT IN FOR SEVERAL minutes and up to 5 minutes by stop watch so that is not the issue and key on seat ect.computer guy who does it for a living tried 5 usbs besides mine and still not recognizing the usb or he did not down load it properly which i instructed him with down loaded instructions from web site how to do and told him everyone says if u follow directions it will work so i have no idea if IT is him or something else.if u have a copy on usb that works i will pay u to send it to me as only other options are to pay sloans in murfreesboro for an hour labor for them to do it or ride 90 miles to chatt tn southern honda powersports and have them do it at no charge since i bought the bike from them. planning on trip to nc friday so i can go by way of chattanooga tn and get them to do it if all else fails.no reason to try anymore myself as i donot have enough memory on lap top to do it as i tried that first and grand children and daughter in law failed also.i use your maintenance videos as i service my own bike except for changing tires.glad u posted about steering spline as i bought the safety pin and installed it but have not attempted to change out the top nut i also bought or the steel stem he sells . as the procedure requires 2 people and not sure about lubing bearings ect that u mention. may have to trailer it to u if u work on bikes at your place and let u do it this winter while not riding and hopefully traxxion co will do your recommendation and make it easier.not sure i will attempt the air filter either but will have to look at your videos to see if i can do it . as u can tell i am not computer savvy and do not post much since even that is a challenge for me to make sure that when i reply it is going to the person i wanted it to go.thanks for all your help.i cannot believe some idiot posted that u were doing so because u got your parts free from traxxion ect but i have learned
that the whole world population is made up of at least 10% of unbelievable people that u have to ignore.my cell no is 6156531358 if u rather talk as i would instead of typing .thanks

OK, I had a heck of a time and I think I know the problem. The GL1800 does not recognize USB3 drives. Another problem is recommended to us a USB drive that is 16Gb. Unfortunately I could not get that to work so here is what I figured out.
1. The USB drive has to have over 16GB of space after it is formatted. A 16GB drive will only have 14.6GB available once it is formatted so you have to use a larger jump drive.
2. The instructions also say to use a USB2 or better, unfortunately the GL does not recognize USB3. (yes USB3 are backward compatible, but only if the device you plug into will recognize and negotiate.)
3. If you are using a PC the drive must be formatted NTFS, but if you are using a MAC then it must be MAC OS Extended. Either format will work as long as the USB has over 16GB of space.

I used a USB2 that is 128 GB and it worked flawlessly and it only took 35-40 minutes. This was after several attempts with multiple drives, multiple formats on the PC and the MAC. I hope this helps others to save some time and a lot of headache.

i had previously mentioned the drive format as a possible issue but could not remember the format. Recommend that you format the usb drive to ntfs which the honda will recognize and work with. The drives i purchased from walmart came with some strange format which was not compatble with honda.

if you are not comfortable with formatting an usb drive, Goole is your friend here.

If you‘re using a Windows computer, the format for the USB stick is NTFS. If you’re using a Mac, the format for the USB stick is Mac OS Extended.

First thing you need to know. Hondas tech used in the navi and guts of the system is very old. Some of it dates back to 2006/7 and 8. Honda and HK robbed the tech trash can and patched in carplay and Android Auto in our systems. It's very slow, old and set in its ways. The system does not care if the thumb drive is USB 2,3 or 3.1 and so on. USB thumb drives are backwards compatible. It has to have a min size thumb drive of 16 gb so the outdated system has the room to unpack the 8+gb file we download from Honda on the thumb drive as it's installed because they cheaped out on memory built into the system. I have tested all USB thumb drives I have from USB 2 16gb to 128gb USB 3.1 and up to 256gb micro sd cards in usb adapters and 7 or 8 other usb thumb drives of different speed and size trying to figure out why people are having so much trouble with such a basic operation. They all work if there is only one main partition and formatted in NTFS or Apples equivalent and are healthy drives with no bad sectors or blocks. One does have to watch out for how thumb drive manufacturers load and store bloatware on the thumb drives. If they put there bloatware on the main partition no problem. Formating the thumb drive in NTFS will make the trash software go away. If there is a second partition on the drive and there bloatware is in files on that partition, that can cause a problem. Hondas system will not let you select a drive/partition and file. It has to be able to find the file in the main partition with no other files on the thumb drive. The file has to be named right. If you have done multiple downloads winblows or other operating system add number to the file or a letter. Most will be using winblows or a apple os so it will be a number. Rename the file back to the proper name. Or it will not be seen by Hondas system. Current file for download is "swdl.iso" if it's swdl1.iso or swdl2.iso, ect, ect it will not be seen and nothing will happen at all. It could take the outdated system a minute or two to actually find the file and start the unpacking and install process. The system has a very slow apu/cpu, memory, i/o and runs at usb 2 speeds at best. Remember this is largely technology pulled from the tech trash can. If you have a fast internet connect don't download the file from Honda directly to the thumb drive. Not that Honda servers have fast download speeds. But let's say you got lucky with a fast download speed the file could get corrupted with all the caching out your computer would be doing while it's going to the slow thumb drive. I did get lucky with my gigabit connect and corrupted several files downloading straight to my fastest thumb drives.

So in a nutshell.
Download the swdl.iso file to your computer of choice.
Make sure it is named correctly
Put your 16gb USB 2.0 or better thumb drive in a usb port on a computer of your choice. Not a docking station or hub. <<< could corrupt the file.
Check to make sure there is only one partition. If there are multiple partitions or extended partitions nuke those partitions and create one main partition on your thumb drive.
Format that partition to NTFS or Apple equivalent.
Copy swdl.iso to the thumb drive, again checking to make sure the file name is correct.
Do not have your bike plugged into a trickle charger. You do not want that noise running in the background of your digital domain.
Plug the thumb drive into the bikes usb cable in the glove box or the trunk if you have a air bag bike. Do Not Plug the thumb drive into a usb accessory cable if you have added one. It will not work on a accessory cable and for the sake of reliability Do Not Use a Extension Cable like you plug your phone into.
Boot the bike to accessory and wait. The system should see the thumb drive and file in about 30 secs to 2 mins. If it does not you did something wrong. If the thumb drive formatted and can pass a basic disk check,, there's nothing wrong with it.
Stay with your bike as the software is installing. I know some of you have a very short attention span, or feel the need to go do something else or watch porno on your phone. Stay with the bike and watch the boring install.
At the end of the install it will ask you if you want to update the software,,,, answer NO. Your software is now updated.
If you walk away and forget about the install or wait too long to answer NO at the end of the install, it will time out and shut down. You will then have to reboot the bike and go through the install again.

Don't be a againer.
It's not that hard.
Good Luck

Unless you discover the USB port has failed, I would fire your "computer guy". It would have taken 2 minutes to refresh the Thumb Drive, ie remove ALL partitions and format. Then merely copy the one file and name it correctly. Turn on the bike, plug in the thumb and wait.
