Oner the years, and at different times, I sometimes have 3 engine repairs going on at one time, but now I have 4.
  • 3 for transmission reapir
  • 1 for ADG repair after the customer installed an aftermarket alternator
The last picture is a Wing waiting to have its engine pulled.

The vast majority of Honda dealership "mechanics" are grossly unqualified to SUCCESSFULLY venture that deeply into a Gold Wing.. EDIT: I will add that it is quite understandable when you consider all the motorcycle, ATV and sometimes watercraft models that come and go as the year go by as well as other non-Honda products dealerships sell. Point is - just can't beat a SPECIALIST for first quality work!

A good experienced mechanic should be capable of tackling just about any job. It may take longer, but certainly possible with a quality outcome.

How does one know which Honda dealerships have "a good experienced mechanic"? Would you rather take their word that they have someone capable of successfully tearing down your Wing to its frame or hand it over to a specialist as experienced as Greg? I truly hope I never have to have anyone go that deep into mine. Greg is 1,500 miles away.

You are correct. The same is true in the medical field. Every time I go to a specialist, the treatment options completely change.

Very true. When I decided to do my own trans repair on my own 2007, that was still under its 3yr warranty, I had to do a personal inventory of my skill sets before taking on the tesk. I knew with my 4-years of formal training in automotive repair, and with a factory Service Manual, all that qualified me. But did I really still want to do it ... what happens if I cannot figure something out. It's not like I can holler across the shop and ask Joe for help. Surprisingly trans repair turned into a large part of my already established specialized business.

As for other good experience mechanics ... many have the capability, but also choose not to. After all, their first one will take them weeks to do, they don't get paid till the repair is done, and in the mean time they have a house payment due in 2 weeks.

Good analogy Greg. One's GP is perfectly fine to monitor your health and attend to many routine problems but when something serious surfaces, one wants a specialist who deals with that problem all the time. Chances for successful resolution are much better.
