Serious warning ... regarding the cover for the small oil filter ... be sure to use the correct o-ring. It may seam that an o-ring, is an o-ring, is an o-ring, however that is not true. The rubber o-rings are made of are very specific. Using an incorrect one can have serious consequences. Remember the o-ring on the Space Shuttle ??? That's an example of one being used a couple of degrees beyond its designed parameters ... catastrophe !!!

As with the Shuttle, not only does temperature affect o-rings, so does pressure, chemicals, as well as other conditions and forces. Using a fork o-ring designed with rubber properties that are intended to expand and swell from fork oil, and be used in an environment well beyond ambient temperature, can be extremely risky. Oil temperature can easily reach 200 deg.

My advise, do like a professional would do. We pros don't do things perfectly at first. However, us professional know it has to work, so we try again until we learned how. For you it might require that you have a supply of correct o-rings on hand. Be sure to oil the mating surfaces, and the o-ring too. The oil allow the o-ring to shift to seat itself as needed. Be sure to install the cover with very little force. Do not use the bolts to draw the cover in. Once the cover has been easily fitted and seated, install the 2 bolts, spin them down by hand using a 8mm socket, and then torque them to 84 in/lbs.

Just because others can't do things correctly does not mean you have to follow suit. Practicing and following well established procedures will be your best friend, and rest assured, almost everyone can do these simple oil changes by using the correct parts.
