Any pics of your GPS mounts

I have an '02 GL1800 and want to add a GPS, probably the Garmin Zumo 550.

I've looked at ram mounts, texelent mounts and Jon's dash mount. I'm concerned about theft and I haven't found any type of mount that looks relatively OK if I take the GPS off (wires dangling, etc) when I'm not on the bike.

Any pics of your GPS mount on and off is appreciated.

I dont have a picture of it, but I mounted my 2610 on a ram mount on the right handle bar.

Every time I dismount from the bike, I close my Nolan modular helmet, set it over the GPS, and secure the helmet with a gun lock made for a pistol. The helmet hides the GPS, it certainly is not full proof, but usually "out of sight, out of mind".

Most of the time I take it off of the bike at night while traveling, but if I leave the GPS on the bike at night (motel), I still lock the helmet over it and place a cover over the bike. Has worked for me the last four years.

I mounted my 550 and GXM antenna on RAM gear to the clutch reservoir bolts. Audio goes from the 550 mount to the Aux cable. When I stop I put the 550 in the trunk and either lay the riding jacket over the bars or the helmet over the 550 mount. If I'm gone for a while sometimes I'll remove the mount and stick that in the trunk too.

check out touratec they have really good gps mounts that lock to the gps, also check out www.wingingit.co.uk they can assist you as well

I used a ram mount to attach to a texelent bar with a custom harness. Very easy to remove the whole unit ,zumo mount and wires when parked .out of sight out of mind .

Mount for the zumo is just behind the clutch resevoir. Also mounted on the texelent bar is the cradle for xm radio , cell phone switch and a good old fashioned map shelf

Here is a picture of my Zumo 450 mounted on the clutch reservoir with Ram Ball mounting that came with the Zumo except I cut the part that mounts to the clutch reservoir clamp with longer bolts. I cut the bottom off, drilled and tapped for a 1/4-20 bolt. You can buy the Ram Ball mount that you can use on the clutch or brake reservoir covers. Have had no problem with it coming loose.

I have the same setup as Frosty. Ram mount on the clutch resivor with a 4 or 5" ram extension. Sets in the right place for me and never moves. When stopped where I can't see the bike it put the Zumo in the truck and lock it.

Well, all the pictures show creativity and nice installs. None show the standard setup that ships with the zumo. Here it is...

I had to shorten the spacers about 1/8 inch so the bolts would work. You leave everything on the handlebar, except the bolts. Those you replace with the longer ones in the kit. It works great and I'm happy. Don't loose that little special key to unscrew the lock nut or you'll never get the unit off your bike. My understanding is that ram makes a keyed wingnut so that would afford you some additional security for the mount.

I don't think there is a mount made that cannot be defeated. Just a simple hacksaw and wire cutters will get 95% of them in about a minute. Only thing I can think of is making it invisible or taking it off.

It wouldn't even take a tool...just grap with both hands and twist the GPS right off the bike...wouldn't take much time or effort, the mounts are only plastic. The locking mounts are really just to keep the GPS from accidently popping out of it's mount while hitting bumps on the road, and to keep honest people honest. When the bike is parked overnight in a parking lot, or it's parked and you are away out of sight, it's best to remove the GPS and put in the trunk. I always remove my GPS when I'm parked in public. It only takes about 15 seconds to remove it and put it out of sight, that's just a bit longer than it would take for someone to twist it off the bike and walk away with it :lol:

Here is a link to the "KNOB W/ KEYED LOCK" you were talking about.

I took off the wing nut that came with the Zumo that would always keep loosening up and replaced with a nylon locking nut so now it does not loosen up and if someone wants to steal it, they will have to break it off or have a wrench handy.

I guess I should have read your post a little closer. If you look at the pictures that "daveo" posted above, you will see his Zumo mounted in the cradle that stays on the bike with all the wiring. You will also see a picture of the cradle with the Zumo missing from the cradle. When the Zumo is removed from the cradle, it has no wires dangling from it. When you want to take it off, all you do is release a little lever and off it comes so you can lock in the trunk or put it in your jacket pocket. As ar as theft goes.......as said by "Roadie". So the Zumo 550 comes with a mount that's basically a docking station.

What about rain with the Zumo off the bike and those contact points. Any problem with those??

Yes the Zumo comes with the cradle (docking station) and everything you need to mount and power it on the bike.
If you look at “daveo's” first picture in his post above you will see a little magnetic cover that flips up and over the contact pins. When the Zumo is off of the cradle you cover up the contact pins with the cover to keep dirt and water off of it.
