ARMED FORCES APPRECIATION DAY - 2004
May 15, 2004 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. - TR Gallo Memorial Park, The Strand, Kingston, New York

Sponsored by: Armed Forces Appreciation Committee: Christine Weiner, Ira Weiner, Frank Dart, Rich Bockelmann and Barbara O’Brien, with the support and assistance of The City of Kingston Mayor’s Office, members of the City of Kingston Fire Department and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office - among numerous others who live and work in Ulster County.

An event to thank & honor our armed forces members, past and present, for their contributions and for their personal sacrifices. THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL EVENT. This is not the stage for airing political opinions. This is time set aside to show respect and to express thanks.

There will be live music, graciously provided by the legendary Levon Helm and his special guests.
(line up is at 10:30/11AM Ames Plaza, Kingston, NY (Exit 19 off NYS Thruway)
A motorcade of hot rods, corvettes and motorcycles will be organized by Sgt. Eric Benjamin ([email protected]) and Sheriff Rich Bockelmann of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office. If interested, please contact them immediately at 340-3802 or email. A mid-morning ride will be planned, ending at The Strand at 1:00 for the event. Adorn your bike and/or vehicle with an American Flag!

Donations of pre-paid phone cards and/or personal care items will be accepted at a booth at the event. The troops are requesting items such as beef jerky, baby wipes and chewing gum. Please bring your donation with you.

Hot dogs and hamburgers will be sold for a nominal amount, with all proceeds going to purchase pre-paid phone cards for the troops overseas. City of Kingston paid firefighters donate their time and equipment for this. Food is donated by local merchants.

Yellow ribbon and red, white and blue ribbon lapel pins will be made by volunteers and sold for a nominal amount, again with proceeds going towards purchasing pre-paid phone cards. We’re inviting elementary schools to participate by having the kids create their own American Flags and lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. We’re asking the Boy and Girl Scouts to come in uniform and assist with the Pledge also. American Legions and VFW posts will be asked to come. We’re inviting all uniformed service personnel to be there whether it’s the military, police, fire, EMS or corrections. These are people who epitomize the foundation of America and the freedoms we so very often take for granted. These are the people who deserve our recognition and our thanks.

COME OUT AND HELP US GIVE THANKS AND RECOGNITION! Bring a photo of your military member and it will be displayed. Wave your American flag or bring your yellow ribbons. If you’d like to participate in any way, whether it be by donations of time and/or services OR if your group would like to take part in any portion of the event, please contact us as soon as possible. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated. We are a not-for-profit group. Any money we receive is used to purchase pre-paid phone cards for the troops. This effort is achieved through the hard work, dedication and support of our community. PLEASE HELP - PLEASE PARTICIPATE.
Call Barbara O’Brien at 340-3802 or email at [email protected] as soon as possible.
