I put 11k on a set a while back and wore out the sides before the center. The 180-70 will correct the spedo error. Avon will have a new model comming out shortly that's made specifically for the GL1800

Avon Venom 180-70

Are their any safety issues with this tire on a Gl1800?
Did the tire change the seat height?
I know that this tire corrects the spedo error but I have been reluctant to use this size because Honda says to use the 180-60 and I am not tire smart enough to make a decision regarding the change.

Thanks for any advice on this matter.

Any motorcycle manufacturer will tell you not to use a different tire size, it is potentially dangerous, now whether it really makes any difference or not...I don't really know. There is a possiblility that other size tire might require a slightly different size wheel.

If I recall correctly, MC tires are listed as width-sidewall ratio. So, a 180-60 is 180mm wide and the sidewall is 60% of that, making it 108mm. A 180-70 would give the a sidewall of 126mm. That would make a difference in seat height since the tire is taller, which is why the speedo is corrected. Hope this helps.

Since this is Friday and I have nothing to do, the following calculations were done to assist. Disclaimer: I have had only two cups of coffee and there may be some inconsistencies.

The overall width of the 180/70 is 180mm and the 180/60 is 178mm. The overall diameter of the 180/70 is 658mm while the 180/60 is 635mm. The 180/70 travels 824 revolutions per mile while the 180/60 travels 842 revolutions.

This means the 180/70 tire is .0787401574 inches wider and .9055118101 inches taller than the 180/60. It also means that at the same revolutions you get 2,793.60890413 feet or .52909259547 miles farther down the road with each mile on a 180/70.

Tom.....The 70 series tire from Avon that people are talking about is for the Valk rear.

The Avons are out for the 1800 Wing and being tested as we speak! Just not for sale yet.

Playing with numbers

I couldn't find any specs as to diameter or width on Avon's website, so I went to Dunlop's website and it gave the following specs on those sizes:

180/60R16 diameter 24.81 in, width 7.04 in

180/70R16 diameter 26.02 in, width 6.92 in

The correction factor I calculated for those is that the 180/70 will travel 4.9% farther for the same revolutions, that's pretty close to the 4% error factor reported on odometer error.

PS When on the Dunlop tire website I noted that the recommended wheel size for both of those tires is identical.

Changing Tire Size with ABS

I like the idea of using the 70 series tire to correct the speedometer. Has anyone tried the 70 series rear tire on a 1800 with ABS?

If the rear tire was turning more slowly with the 70 series would the ABS sytem think that the rear was locked and release the brake?

avon venom
to answer some of the questions about the venom.
i did not notice any difference in height of the bike.
it did seem to correct the speed o meter, and i should get better gas milage
its a much softer ride than the dunlop and seems to corner much better.
the sidewalls are suppose to be thicker. with the weight of the bike i like that
the reason i went to the venom. i spoke to a honda machanic and he recommended the tire.
i love my goldwing. 03 with 12000 miles
