Backrest for Russell/Day-Long Custom Seat

Greetings!!
My first post here and looking for backrest recommendation to go with Russell/Day-Long custom seat. The Day-long seat is thicker than the stock and does not have the "cut-off" part so I would assume I need to slit/cut in order to install a back-rest. Problem is I'm not sure which one would work best. I prefer Utopia but I understand it only works with the stock seat. Hopefully, someone can shed some lights here.

Have you called Russell Day-Long to see if they can alter your seat to add their backrest? With the Russell backrest you can make small adjustments up/down and backwards/forwards. If you're located in colder climates, its a good time of year to send your seat in for alteration.
My seat with the Utopia backrest will be there 1/30, Russell has not said a word about not using the Utopia, I may speak with them today or tomorrow and will confirm. I have had the RDL backrest on other seats and I prefer the Utopia over the RDL

I'm in CA so I can ride all year long..:). I was hoping to find a DIY solution instead of having to send my seat for alterations. Thanks for the suggestion tho..

Utopia would be my choice as well after reading few reviews. Do post an update. Thank you!!
Just curious... Is the only issue you're concerned with is that RDL needs to cut/slit the seat for the backrest? Or is there a bigger problem mounting it in the GW? I have a build date in Feb and I'm getting the RDL backrest. Hopefully it goes ok! I do have a RDL with their backrest on my Valkyrie and they did cut out a slot in the rear seat to slide the backrest in.

I have a RDL seat on order. I called and asked about having them install a Utopia backrest instead of their backrest (cosmetic reasons only) and I was told it can be done, but it creates some issues with the foam process that could cause your passenger to slide forward. Best to call and get a first had answer. The folks at RDL have been patient with answering my questions.
I spoke to RDL yesterday about the Utopia I will be using with the 2018 seat I'm sending out next week and was told there would be no problem using it just some extra stitching around the slit, no mention of any other problem.

My wife has the RDL backrest on her seat. I had a Utopia backrest on my 2013 factory seat. The RDL backrest and the way it is built into the seat is much better, and looks like it belongs there. If it were me, I would check into seeing if they can add there's. The way there foam is molded into the seat, I don't think you would want to be doing it yourself.

It might even void there warranty on the seat.
We are talking about a 2018 seat here not the previous Generation correct?

Yes. Looks like I have no choice but to send my seat along with Utopia backrest instead of installing it myself.. This will have to wait... Or I can learn how to touch up the slit >:)..

It is very easy to install compared to the previous generation.

Are you saying I can do it myself? I remember reading about the slit opening somewhere that it should be fine without any touch-ups but I was worried it would get ripped over a period of time without a proper touch-up..

I'm not sure what your asking, installing on the stock seat is simple, if your asking about afterwards with the RDL seat I don't know. I would send the seat with the backrest installed even if I wasn't having the backrest recovered just to be sure it was done right and not have a problem with RDL.
I sent my seat in with the Utopia backrest bracket installed. No need to send backrest unless you are getting it recovered. Call RDL if you have questions. I asked them that question and others and they were very helpful.
