What a bummer! I took a Basecamp route of 15 waypoints filtered it through GPSBabel saving it as a GPX XML on my thumb drive. The bike accepted and processed it. When I look at the route it is sending me all over the place in a haphazard fashion not even close to the route I created on Basecamp. The same route exported to my NAV VI looks perfect. In addition it has 14 waypoints instead of the 15 I created omitting the final destination. I tried this multiple times with different routes with the same result.

I did a little bit of basic detective work and noticed the following. If I open both the Basecamp created .gpx file and the one created by GPSBabel I find all my waypoints listed in alphabetical order. Each entry is proceeded by "wpt" and includes lat/long and various other pertinent information. The next section of both files start out with "rte" and seems to be the actual layout of the route and shows my waypoints in the correctly routed order. Now when I look at the route on the bike I find the waypoints listed in the same alphabetical order as they were listed in the .gpx file. It seems that when the file is processed in the bike it simply sets the route up based on the alphabetical listing rather than the route as designated in the "rte" portion of the file.

It seems to me that the problem has something to do with the translation from Basecamp though GPSbabel to the bike. What I'll try next is to make a route in the bike and then export it to the thumb drive so I can edit the file and see what's different.

If anyone out there is good at this stuff and has any ideas/suggestions please chime in as I really need this to work. I can't upload a .gpx file here so if you'd like to see it please let me know and I'll email it to you so you can take a look. Any help is appreciated!!

I made a route on the bike and exported it. Comparing a .gpx created by the bike and by Basecamp > GPSbabel shows them to be very much different. While the babel one has a lot of information gleamed from Basecamp about each waypoint including the waypoint name, the one one from Harmon has almost nothing other than "rtept"s which are the lat/long of the waypoints in the proper order. babel also has "rtept"s but I'm wondering if the bike's software is getting hung up on all the extraneous garbage it doesn't use. Looks like we need some way to strip the Basecamp file even further before Harmon is going to be able to use it in any effective way. The way it is now it will list your waypoints on the bike but with no name associated with them other than part of the address and in a non-route order. To use it you would have to load it to the bike and then go back and figure out which waypoint is which and then put them in the proper order and resave it. What a mess! I'll keep going but I'm thinking this is a lost cause. Probably will have to use the Garmin after all.

I think I'll make a route on Honda's routing software and see what that looks like.

I tried exporting a .gpx file from Basecamp to Trip Planner and then to the bike and that works fine. You just have to keep the waypoints plus shaping points on Basecamp to 25 or less. Looks like that will be the solution.

I have made 3 routes using Honda trip planner and transferred to bike. Routed me as I planned in trip planner and I didn't have to have the waypoints(WP) directly on the road. Once past the WP it just went to the next WP. Now honda needs to increase the WPs on trip planner.

Fantastic!! I got GPSbabel to work with Basecamp!! I went through the options in GPSbabel and set it up as follows:

Under translation options check Waypoints, Routes
Click on Filters, click on Miscellaneous and check Tracks and Waypoints

That's it! I think filtering out the waypoints is what did it since the simplified .gpx file Harmon uses doesn't contain waypoints, just routepoints which are different. The file is still loaded with what they call Garmin RoutePointExtensions which creates a more precise path but it looks like the bike just ignores them. I did a test and took the route that was loaded from babel and saved it on the bike with a different name and then exported it so I could look at it on the computer and sure enough they had stripped out all the stuff they weren't using. Obviously without stripping out the waypoints before sending the file to the bike caused it to fail.

Anyway, its fixed and I'm happy :)

If you use Basecamp the limit is only that of the bike which is 99 including waypoints and shaping points. For me anyway, Basecamp is a lot easier and exacting to use than Honda's software is. A lot of people have trouble learning it but once you get it you can do most anything like drag routes around, etc. That's why I wanted it to work with this bike so bad.

Fred, I used GPS babel in the fall with Basecamp and had zero issues following your documented examples. I would like to know if something has changed if you find out anything. Thanks

Its very simple to fix. Open GPSbabel and under translation options check Waypoints then click on Routes then click on Filters then click on Miscellaneous and check Tracks and Waypoints. That allows the babel .gps file to be read correctly by the bike.

The problem I had was that there is so much more data from Garmin in the file that when the bike read the file it picked out the waypoints but not in route order. The file contains waypoints (wpt) listed in alphabetical order but the bike doesn't use them as such but uses something else contained in the file which are rtepts. rtepts are your waypoints but listed in the order you want to visit them. Seems like the bike's program failed before it ever got to the rtepts. I tried 6 different routes and it read them all correctly once the GPSbabel filtered out the wpt's. My version of GPSbabel is 1.5.4 on a PC.

Just had a thought, if it worked in the fall without setting the filter to delete waypoints I wonder if something changed within the bike's software.

I think trip planner would be easier if it had more way points and you could zoom in like Google maps does, way in. Then you just load the route and tanner to bike, no third party app needed

Another thing I had trouble with in TP was trying to find a place. IE: I was looking for a gas station in Ramona CA, but I couldn't figure out how to do that without going to google maps. On BC all you do is search "fuel" in a given area and it shows you all of them and then you can pick one. When I make day routes I go from hotel to hotel but there isn't a way I could figure how to do that on TP unless you already know the hotel you're looking for. Maybe I'm just missing it. Any ideas? Sure wish Honda allowed for shaping points. They really make a big difference when negotiating a route. You can put in a bunch of them in order take certain roads and they never alert. Its so easy to do, you just click on the route and pull it over to the road you'd like it to take and it reroutes by itself. Very cool! You can still do that in BC when making a route for the Wing but Honda is going to convert them to waypoints. Of course we have 99 now so its not really a big issue in most cases.

When you say third party you're referring to GPSbabel? If so, that's very true. TP is prettier, too :)

BTW, the TP help says:

When you are planning a trip, the map will automatically calculate a route, or path, between each stop. You can control this somewhat while adding new stops or by clicking on the blue route line and dragging it to a new location. This will create a new stop on the trip.

But when I click on the route and try to drag it the whole map moves. Do you know how to do it?

I don't have an '18, but...

A "routepoint" (rtepts) is another version of a waypoint in a GPX file. The '12 - '17 bike GPS requires routepoints, or it too becomes very confused. These routepoints are named/numbered locations for a stop, and is what I used for my GPX files I created with BC, then ran thru GPS Babel filter to get the bike GPS to recognize the routepoints.

Good GPX anatomy lesson here: http://www.globeriders.com/article_pages/article08_RTW/article08_rtw.shtml

Yes, the '18 is the same and uses rtepts. The rtepts are listed within the .gpx file in route order. Above that section are wpts which have basically the same information but sorted in alphabetical order. When the bike's software processes the .gpx file including the wpts it uses them exclusively and tries to make a route based on the alphabetical sort it sees them in. Its like it never gets through the file far enough to see the rtepts. When I set GPSbabel to strip out the wpts it used the rtepts instead and the route comes out as desired. It took me like 3 hours yesterday to figure that out. I'm no expert :)

The waypoints that are the same as a given routepoint are attempting (at least in a Garmin...) to 'pretty-up' what that routepoint looks like.

Stripping out the waypoints forces the GPS to only pay attention to routepoints.

I think the Honda Trip Planner/H-D Trip Planner only generates a list of waypoints; thus forcing the GPS on the bike to connect the points.

...and create mass confusion.

I'd be curious to know what number of routepoints the original version of GPS firmware could handle.

I think you may be referring to gpxx which can be seen as RoutePointExtension which are more precise locators and WaypointExtension which give more info about a waypoint like names, phone nos, etc. The Garmin .gpx file has those and more none of which is used by the bike. Here is an example of one wpt. keep scrolling, there's more examples.

No I don't know how. I'm working to figure it out.
