Burble & Spit (Oil in Induction Box Redux)

Greetings!

Lately, my 2008 GL has been doing a little of the old 'burble and spit' when you roll off the throttle. In the days of carburetors, I'd suspect that a) the mixture is too rich, and/or b) the plugs are dirty.

Then I found this when changing the air filter:

The throttle valves are clean, so I don't think it was sucking raw oil, but I'll bet it was sucking in some oil smoke, which would result in dirty plugs.

Plugs being extremely cheap, I'm just going to go ahead and replace them.

Unless the Exxon Valdez sailed through my induction box while I wasn't looking, I'd say that oil came from my own crankcase. Is it possible that my crankcase breathers are O.K. and this is just a result of having dumped the bike over a couple of times, or do I need to pull them and test/clean/replace them?

From what I have seen that is not unusual. I just wipe it out when I change the air filter.

Another reason to not change your rear wheel with the bike laying down perhaps??
You dumped it over a couple of times! That can't be good.

Also, take care to not over fill the crankcase with motor oil. The excess will be drawn off through the crank vent/pair system and make such mess. If you putting im more than 4 quarts, its too much.

Never while moving, mind you; always at a dead stop. Just like that guy riding the tricycle on Laugh-In.

Once because my leg went to sleep after ten hours in the saddle, and once because I stopped right next to a deep hole.

It's great fun. Everyone needs to do it at least once.
How many miles and how did you break in the motor? do you lug the motor? i will have to check my bike on sat am, the top shelter is off so i can change the shock so its not a big deal to check.

That is pretty normal, what will add to it is overfilling the crankcase with oil and not emptying the drain tube.
Just clean it up, drain the crud from the drain tube under the left cover by the spark plugs and be carefull when filling with oil. Many time some oil will remain in the case after draining and then you add 4 qts and now there is too much. I always add 3.75 qts and then start the engine and let it run for a minute, shut it off. After a few minutes check the oil level by the dipstick and add as required.

That sounds like a good plan. I think I'll try that.
