Franko;

I researched this last summer, although I ended up buying my tent trailer in B.C. I called RIV (1-888-848-8240) and Canada Customs (1-800-461-9999 (0)). Both were quite helpful. The following applies on trailers manufactured before a certain date in 2007 (didn't pay attention to the exact date because at the time I was looking at an older unit):
  • Call RIV with 17-digit VIN no. RIV will confirm that it is a valid VIN no.
  • Make sure the trailer has a compliance label (small plate with VIN, weight, country of origin, etc.)
  • Need a trip permit or the use old plates. Make sure you have insurance.
  • Go to USA, make the purchase, get title of ownership and bill of sale
  • When coming back into Canada, at Canada Customs they will give you a Vehicle Import Form #1
  • Pay approximately $205 (RIV fee) (or can pay RIV fee on-line to speed up the process) plus GST (trailers are duty-free)
  • Drive the trailer home. RIV will send you documentation to take to Canadian Tire for the federal inspection. This takes about ten days.
  • Then get provincial plates and pay PST
Hope this helps.
