I would like a florescent green or orange half helmet, for better see-me visibility. I don't see any that are available locally and I don't want to order one in case it doesn't fit properly. I remember back years ago we were told not to paint a helmet. I wonder if a modern helmet can be painted?

I remember a local guy up here in New Jersey that used to add painted graphics on helmets as well as single color painted helmets.

He made a successful business out of it in his spare time, but I haven't seen him around in a while.

I think that manufacturers use regular car paints to paint the helmet's shells and I don't see how that would be detrimental to the integrity of the helmets, but I could be wrong!

painted helmets

Yes they can. I've got about a dozen from 30 years of dirt track (car) racing and most have been custom painted. Just get it done by someone that paints helmets to ensure proper prep.

Ambiant air dry paints are okay.. Just do not put a helmet in a paint curing oven.

You can also have your helmet vinyl wrapped if you are concerned about paint solvents effecting the helmet.

Wipe the surface with some Grease & Wax remover from your local body Supply Co.

Scuff it with Scotchbrite Pad, until you have a dull finish over the entire helmet,

Reclean it, and Paint Away.

I wanted to get 2 older full face helmets painted to match the color of my Wing. The cost was going to be $100- each which is more than I paid for the helmets. The painter also told me that painting a helmet can reduce its effectiveness due to the chemicals in the paint.
