Thanks much. I may give them a call but I would rather find a good independent shop nearer Austin. Do you recall about what they charge for the installation on a GL1800? Thank you.

Just did mine about 2 weeks ago.
Probably took about 3 hrs total (but could knock that down to 2 now that I've had the experience of taking the shelter off )
There are lots of photos, videos, and tips on the board here to help you out. Plus, if you get into a bind you can post a question and it usually gets answered within 10-15 mins.
Sure beats paying someone else $100.00+ to do it!

I can help you with the install. Helotes is about 90 miles from Austin; just outside San Antonio. I've installed about a dozen CBs so it doesn't take very long. Send me a PM.

bugsquawsher - me thinks you just scared the pdoddle out of Ben with that picture :eek:4: :22yikes: he may never ask for assistance again.

... and Ben, I have installed 5 or 6 CB's on GL1800's, would be happy to assist you if you want to ride to Spring, Texas - buy me lunch, we'll call it even - and I'll even put an SWR meter on it. :yes1:

:shrug:I shouldn't post my oil change pictures?
BTW
If the SWR is off, what can you do about it. I know these things have a terrible Ground plane. Is there really any adjustment on the antenna?
I ask cause I have really looked.
I might take ya up on the SWR thing one day.

Oh yea.
Do you think a Big Old Wilson antenna would look good on a wing

I've put a CB in both my 1800's and the SWR was a little off on both. I had to grind a little off the bottom of the upper antenna shaft on both. If I remember correctly, I think I took off about 3/4" or so.

I did not try to optimize it for one channel. I checked channel 1, 20, and 40, and cut until the SWR was as low as I could get it across the band.

I initially moved the antenna up a little in the mount and the SWR got worse.

Don't forget you need special adapters to connect an SWR meter to the bike. I think I got mine at Radio Shack.

Bquasher - I think you may have misunderstood the directions for changing the oil. You don't have to take the bike apart, turn it upside down to pour the new oil ....... LOL :wrong:

Like Morris said, adjust as close as you can get it - and in my case that meant cutting roughly a 1/2 inch off of the upper antenna. And yes you gotta have the proper connections in order to get a sound reading. There's probably better test equipment, but mine is all Radio Shack, seems to work well.

Last, I think that BOW antenna would look great - just be careful of the backlash!?!?!?! :22yikes:

CB Help please. For another central Texas guy.

I have spent more hours looking for info on my CB problem, than I care to admit.
On my 2002 wings' CB, the volume, the channel selector and the squelch won't "toggle" down. They "toggle up just fine. The switches are clean as if they were new, I switched the CB radio out with another bike, thinking my CB radio was defective. Nope, same problem, the three control buttons don't have any responce in the down position. Please understand, I can push the buttons to the down position, but no responce. Suggestions please. Thanks, Hardy

Hello Len,

Saw where you are retired Telco. I am going on 37 yrs as an OSP engineer for Contel/GTE/Verizon. I was just reading through here trying to find info on installing a CB on my 2008 GL 1800 trike. Wanted to get it on before the 2009 Texas Trike Round-up in Kerrville in April. I talked to the folks at Mitchells Trikes in Gatesville where I bought my trike last August and they said they could put it on for about $120. I figure by the time I bought a GL 1800 service manuel ($70 or $80 bucks) and spent 7 or 8 hrs trying to put it on myself, that might not be such a bad deal. What do you think? I can't find any place that will do it cheaper. Boy, Honda sure is proud of that little radio and from what I read on the forum, it only gets out about 1 or 2 miles. I just want something that is going to work with my controls already on my trike and also the intercom system. Wingstuff has the radio for $599.99 and $114.99 for the antenna. That is the cheapest I could find on the radio & antenna and Mitchells Trikes said they could not beat the price that Wingstuff sells it for. Let me know what you think.

Hubert,
I installed my radio and set the SWR's on it. I had to grind a little off the tip, but I got it down. I can talk around five miles off of the "back plane", but the talking distance is shorter off the "front plane". I guess it is just the way these Wings are made.

Oh! I am a retired SBC Telco guy! I hired on Southwestern Bell and retired SBC..Never made it to AT&T! ha ha
