In case anyone is interested.

Brenda and I will be leaving Denver early in the morning on the 3rd, and taking a meandering route through CO spending the last night (Friday) in Durango or Cortez and then riding home Saturday morning.

The CO route has not been determined yet.

Enjoy the ride.

A few weeks ago there were construction zones on 160 across the res, the kind where there was one lane traffic and over a 30 minute wait at one of them. Also on 89 between Flag and the 160 turn. If they are still working, make sure you have a lot of water. It got hot sitting there in the sun for 40 plus minutes.

However, while sitting at one of them, there was a bicyclist in the line of traffic. I asked him how far he was going. He said about 100 miles for that day, but normally a little less. I didn't complain after that.

The road you've plotted east of I-40...US-54...did the segment from Stratford, TX to Emporia, KS, then into Olathe, KS on I-35 on day two of our recent trip. We made it to Portales, NM on day one. Nice roads, not much construction, not too heavily traveled.

Updated routes

Due to continued flooding in the I-29 corridor I'm just going to go straight up north after a jaunt over to Las Cruces to add on some miles.

Once Brenda arrives in Denver we'll spend three days riding this route before we come home.

Here's my SPOT tracker. It should be live about 0400 on Friday and hopefully it's still moving at 0400 on Saturday.

I lived in Ludlow MA when I was a kid.

Holyoke MA was near where I lived in MA.

The last name of one of my best friends is Dalton.

There is no admission fee to Mt Rushmore, but there is an $11 parking fee whether you are one rider on a motorcycle or 9 people crammed into an SUV. You do NOT have to park to see the monument, but the best close-up photos will be taken from inside. I like this shot because it was very overcast yet the sun was shining just on the faces of the monument.

The obligatory stop.

The view you see here is what I saw the most of so far on this trip. Long and straight. Long and straight. Long and straight. Zzzzzzzzzzz.

Abandoned bridge over the Powder River in Montana.

A little trivia for the area. I wish I had more time to just explore.

Here's why. 4 miles of Wing dual-sporting.

This has been an expensive trip so far.

This is at the Sioux County line in the Oglala Grasslands. I had to pee so I peed on the county line. I think it was 25 minutes until the next vehicle passed by. This is looking to the west.

When I was peeing on the roadway I had a sense that someone was watching. Sure enough, these guys were curious as to what I was doing.

What's that you say? You can't see anything in the prior picture? Well, let me set the camera on the tripod and use maximum zoom. Now can you see them?

And I forgot to mention, I did the 1550 (approx) miles in 23.5 hours. I did the first 1000 in 15 hours flat, beating my last SS1K by 3H 5M but that was a two-up ride.

Humongous storms in Santa Fe up through Colorado Springs. That was probably the worst part of the ride. Lightning, 50 mph winds, heavy rain.

Got small hail going to Sturgis along with high winds and rain, but I just ducked under overpasses a couple of times to let the worst stuff pass by.

High temps of 95-105 along most of the route yesterday, and then it dropped about 30 degrees in 50 miles as I got pounded with wind and rain again on my way to Denver. About 2775 miles to this point so far.

I've been rained on every day so far and temps have been a low of 51 to a high of 109. I sure am glad I have my LD Comfort gear. I soaked down several times yesterday.

I have a business meeting today and then Brenda flys in this afternoon. We'll tour SW Colorado for a few days and then be back home on Saturday night.

great ride great pics. I'm envious but I don't think I could do 15-20 hours per day anymore.
I certainly can't do it on a continuous basis, but I did manage about 34 hours straight plus minimal sleep the prior night (3-4 hours maybe). And even after the 34 I only slept 2.5 hours before staying up for another 8 hours so I can understand how the IBR guys manage to pull those long stints in the saddle when they need to.

Brian,

I went to school in Texas so my reading comprehension sometimes is not the best, so forgive this question if it is a dumb one. Is your trip scheduled for this coming weekend, 08/04 or are you on it now?

Odds are I'm heading north this weekend, loose plans, maybe meet Z in Flagstaff and then who knows, maybe meet some Texas friends in Sturgis, or the Texas friends may turn northwest at Raton and forget Sturgis. Whatever, if you are wandering around the Inter Mountain West look for the Dirty Fat Girl. Who knows, I might pull up on your 6 o'clock.

BTW, I've just got to get out and ride. This kitchen redo is killing me, other than riding to work, the only ride I've done in the last couple of months was the BBG for BBQ. I'm in the short rows, 11 more drawers to build and install, then my part is finished for a month or so.

Ken, we're leaving Denver in the next hour or so. Plans are to ride various roads in and around SW Colorado which may include much of the following...

Mt Evans> I-70> 6> I-70> 91> 24> 82> 133> 92> 65> I-70> Fruita> CO Natl Mon> 50> 141> 145> Telluride (just because)> 62> 550> 50> 149> 160> Mesa Verde (if we have time)> Cortez> 4 Corners> Home

My SPOT will be on, so if you have net access on the road just check to see where we are. We intend Cortez to be the stopping point on Friday, and then ride home on Saturday so we will be dilly-dallying along doing a lot of sight-seeing.

I am way jealous, I started 12 days of vacation about 2 hours ago and had planned on spending another week riding around Southwestern CO. That was before the well died last week and my half of the new pump was $1500.00. That kinda took the edge off another Co trip. Oh well, I will just have to have my vacation though you. A couple of recommendations, while in Durango have lunch at Serious TX BBQ. They have two both on 550, one West of 550 on the North side of town and the other North of the road on the South side of town. The other would be if you like ruins give a whole day to Mesa Verde, a couple of years ago I gave it a half day and only did a 50 mile loop. I left the Weatherhill loop untouched and that was on my schedule till the pump thing came up.

I gotta stop reading the board during lunch, I fear!

Here I sit, in my cubicle, enjoying reading the board during my lunch just now.

I pull up the link provided - I see you're sitting in Silverton, CO enjoying lunch, I presume.

I am jealous of you at this moment, Brian... ...really, I am!

Your scenery is a hell of a lot better than mine is at this moment...

Have fun!

Yep. That would be the Brown Bear Cafe behind me. I had the grilled cheese on sourdough with a side of O-rings, and Brenda had the ham/cheese sandwich with homemade chicken noodle soup. Both were very tasty.
