Considering an F6B

3901 Views 37 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  hardwareace
I am 67 years old, just bought a used Goldwing, but find it a bit cumbersome around town. I go on 2 road trips every year, but wonder if the F6B would not be a better bike for me. My road trips are usually 1 week long, the wing is great for these! But I might get more daily use from the bagger.

Does it handle better at low speeds? Does it feel lighter?

Appreciate your advice

I've ridden a few GL1800's and never liked them.
I love my F6B!
My advice, head down to any Honda dealer and test drive one.
Will do in May when the snow and ice go away
The B has a lower center of gravity and weighs a little less. The best advice you will ever get is to find a vacant parking lot and practice your slow speed maneuvers. The B is still no lightweight. Watch some U-Tube videos for proper technique. I've been riding for 47 years and I still find time a few times a year to practice certain maneuvers.
Hey Teach! Hot dang! Things are looking up! Boys let me introduce the ridinist young lady on the planet. Most of us couldn't carry her lunch box. She is truly a Georgia Peach. And she will be an asset to this forum. Welcome Teach.

Lol. Thanks for the kind words, Shooter.
F6B versus Goldwing

According to the Honda web site. The F6B is around 60 to 90 pounds lighter depending on which model wing you're comparing it to. The seat height on the F6B is .6 inches lower.

To the best of my knowledge the frame and drive train are the same. It does not really have a lower center of gravity unless you figure in the riders weight is positioned lower because of the seat height.

Personally, I like having the trunk.

Practice this in a empty parking lot. Hold the clutch at the fiction zone. The point where the clutch just starts to engage. Ride in a large circle in second gear. Look to the center of the circle. Pull the clutch in just slightly and the bike will lean over more. Let the clutch out and the bike will stand up.

After you get good at this, do the same thing in first gear.

Hope this helps.

I'm 67 too and my advise is to stick with the wing a bit longer, practise makes perfect and you'll get to handle it fine with a bit of time in the saddle. I find each year there's a bit of re-familiarization at the season start to get back to where I was at the previous season end, even though I do winter ride, it just takes a few town rides and I actually enjoy the town riding very much.

I don't know about the US F6B but our ones don't have reverse and that, for me, would be a no brainer for town use. I can easily get a wheel of my wing into a depression, a dent or a drainage channel, for example, in the road surface and I can't wheel it out without reverse; so if your F6B's are without reverse I'd consider that a serious deficit. Plainly some folk work around it but it would be too much of a limitation for me.

If you already have a Goldwing GL1800 and want the lighter FB6 for around town other than a couple of weeks out of the year. You might want to consider this. It will allow you to keep your current Wing to save the expense of a new FB6. Re-install the trunk for long trips. I plan on doing this. Of course a new seat to fit the new line of the hybrid fb6/Goldwing will be in order IMO

They have what is called a MBL Sport Kit

If you are referring to the MBL Sport kit, AKA the "Bagger Kit' (see here) it appears that it is no longer made.

Yes that is what I'm referring to. Wow! Sorry about that. I hadn't looked in a while. Have had other priorities in life and for my Wing to invest the roughly $500 for the kit. It saddens me that they might have discontinued it. I will call them to see if it is still available. I will post results.

Its always better when they let the dog out......uh.....
The Hawk out!!!
With all respect to rayjoe I've ridden both and own the B. It feels and handles 200 lbs less than a Full Wing to me. And yeah the center of gravity is lower. No trunk up high especially if you have it full of stuff. Seat is lower to the ground and that helps bring the center of gravity lower. The bike just feels more nimble.
