De Glazing the Garmin 376C

I have started to get some minor scratching in the anti-reflective coating my 376c again. I called Garmin and talked to the tech group about sending it back. They tried to tell me that they haven't had any problems like this reported before, but I have personally returned one unit already for this, and I know other folks who have sent two or more back.

So then I changed tactics and asked them how I could remove the coating altogether. Interestingly enough the tech then told me that his supervisor had good luck using glass cleaner to remove the coating on one. Funny, just seconds before he had told me they hadn't been having this problem, yet they already know how to remove the coating.

So anyway, to make a short story longer, I got out a brand new microfiber towel and some Windex and went to work. About 20 minutes later I had successfully removed all of the reflective coating, and my screen now has no more scratches or hazing and looks brand new. It does show reflections a bit more, but I think I can live with that better than I could the scratches and hazing. The display is also just a bit brighter now, since the reflective coating is not blocking the backlight as much.

This is good information to know. Thanks!!! I use my 478 all the time and the screen still looks almost like new. Guess I am either very lucky or very careful about cleaning it or touching it.
OR unlike mine your coating was properly applied. This coating should not come off just by light rubbing of a finger. Nor should cleaning with a micro-fiber cloth (without windex) remove the coating either. It's just more junk from China. It was designed in the USA, assembled in Taiwan, but where did the parts come from?

Same here. Clear protector goes on the same day I get it. My screen is still new looking, Knock on wood. I did call Garmin to get a RMA# last week. My black rubber is starting to come off a little on the round button to move you up, down, sideways. He tried to see if he could just send me a new rubber overlay, but he came back and said they are pressurized? and that I didnt want to open it up, only them. I just hate being without it while they are working on it.

What are you guys doing to your screen to make them get all scratched? Before I got my clear lens, I kinda treated mine like a lair of sunglasses. I never wiped it with a dry cloth, etc. I would either blow the dust off when I cleaned my bike, then wipe it down, or I would use a damp rag.

I'm not ribbing you guys, just curious as too how or why they are scratching so much. I would freak if mine scratched. Thats why I spent $5.00 and got a very tough protecotor with great clarity. I cant even tell its on there by looking at it, just my fingers can feel it. But I never have to worry about scratching, just wipe away.

I treated the lens on my 478 the same way I treat my glasses that I have been wearing for 50+ years, with the utmost care! It started scratching within the first week. This problem is not owner related, but rather Chinese junk fabricated in China by manufacturers that cannot repeat the same process from batch to batch!

It isn't scratching. Whatever the coating is that they put on the 376C begins to delaminate, it just looks like scratches. I suspect the delamination is due to humidity, but this is just a guess. If you remove the coating, with elbow grease and cleaner, it is better visually. Although I wonder what the purpose of the coating is in the first place. I have not seen any negative effects from not having it for over a year now.
