... just when I think I'm starting to get the knack of working on the bike

I took the old brake pedal off ... easy enough.

Tried installing a new pedal and it looks like the shaft is has somehow gotten pushed in a bit ... there is not enough shaft sticking out.
?

Looking at the manual it looks like the shaft should almost come out to end of the pedal ... mine barely goes in one quarter of the way before the pedal bottoms out.

tried installing the old pedal ... same thing.

somehow, while taking off the old pedal or pushing on the new one,
the whole shaft seems to have gotten pushed in.

before I take anything else apart, is there any easy way to pull the shaft back out? ... I've tried gently prying it with a couple of screw drivers but it won't budge and I don't want to mess up the splines.

Thanks,
Dennis
