For those getting the newest Escort with the update feature, be aware it really is a huge PITA. 1st, you must use your laptop to do the downloading. That means sitting in your car with the detector powered by cars 12v system. and downloading from there. Or you can buy a 120v to 12v converter to do the download to your detector in your house. Make sure that Escort HAS THE DAN CONVERTER before you buy the detector. In my case, the did not have the converter and I was told, "hook it up in your car and use your laptop". I told the idiot that I dont use a laptop in my car. I had to buy a converter which ESCORT DOES NOT PROVIDE when you buy a new X or convert the I to a IX. Then the fun of registration, datebase keycodes etc begins. After your 1 yr free database runs out, you must buy a subscription. Then you must wait for a DB key before you can do anything. Did I tell you that when you buy the code on the net from their website, they also charge you $4.95 postage to send you the same piece of paper you got with your detector, but they now add a 8 digit db key codesticker. Why couldnt they just send the db key to your email addy which is where they send the order confrimation email too? What a rip off. Then when you get the DB keycode 4 days later in the mail and go thru their method of regristration, you then must wait an additional 1 hour or more, per their rep, before you can download anything. The whole system sucks IMHO. The new Cobra with its usb uploading system makes the Escort look like a old piece of crap. Now if the Cobra is as good as the Escort in protection, you can bet I will be buying a new Cobra and tossing the Escort........:evil::evil::evil::evil:

If you're so unhappy with your Escort, post it for sale. If it's the 9500i/x I'd be interested in buying it.

From what I read, it's still the standard reference for detector performance.

Escort Radar Detector

I've used the Rocky Mountain Radar detector/scrambler for three years and love it. Before, I used the Escort in my truck, but the RMR det. worked so well on the bike, I bought one for the truck. It not only tells you that you are under surveilance, it also scrambles the signal and sends it back at the LEOs. It totally wipes out lazer. I have contacts with LEOs that confirm this.
A tupperware bike produces a small profile anyway, but with the white noise signal added to it and "reflected" back to the sender, it confuses the sending unit. It just keep sampling you.

Do you recommend a separate scrambler or a combo uint? What unit do you have? I currently use a Valentine 1. Thanks.

That pretty much validates everything that RadarRoy and just about every other tester has said about the RMR products.

Not to mention that radar jamming devices are illegal everywhere...

BTW, BlackHat, I bet the front headlights of the wing would make a great reflective surface to get a good laser signal off of.

They are all a piece of crap, illegal most everywhere, and IMHO useless and distracting.

If you ride within reasonable limits of posted speeds, you will not have a problem.

Just my opinion after about 2 million miles of driving as a salesman and many more on my bike, no tickets. Speeding does not get you anywhere fast.

Speed excessively and sooner or later you will get busted, and if the "man" sees a detector, you will get busted to the max.

Your call...Your money.

They are not all a piece of crap and they are currently only illegal in two US states.

I don't necessarily disagree with your other points, but these two statements are flat-out wrong.

Sorry for your update trouble, sounds like a legitimate complaint but don't throw out the baby with the bath water. They are far from being a piece of crap. Any Escort R/D used along with proper discretion and observational skills will be near bulletproof. They are just that good, with phenomenal detection ranges and false signal eliminating features. I've used and tested them to the max for years, they perform very well. Thru the years I've tryed and disgarded some others with short detection ranges and numerous false signals, Cobra and Whistler were two of the worst.

I would like to install one on my 08 and just plug it into the left pocket into the cigarette lighter. Its not illegal in Texas. I used to enforce it for 31 years here in San Antonio, and yes i like to speed out in west texas or where there is open road, or just run a power test sometimes. Roll on where the party never ends.

I don't have any issues with long downloads. It only takes a minute to down load the updates they send you in the e-mail. I do them at my desktop PC with a converter I got from Radio Shack.

The only state they are illegal in is Virginia, the other place is D.C. and it isn't a state, even though D.C. is in a state of confussion.:doorag:

Yeh, ask former NY governor Elliot Spitzer about the PITA he got from his escort. I am telling you, escort could realy foul up the works and could be a real problem. Ask any politician who has been serviced by an escort.

Absolutley Best Radar Protection Anywhere

I found the best protection against speeding tickets when you speed - ride with a Law Enforcement Officer (active or retired). All he has to do is flash his badge and bingo......you are back on the road in a flash, no ticket. Not fair but that's the way its done. Trust me.

And in the South, a lot of departments give out badges to relatives - i.e. "Deputy Parent", "Deputy Brother" etc. so you if you ride with one of those, you are also good to go.

Topster,

I had some issues with the download service similar to yours, but I was able to make it all work finally. Though I agree, it is a much bigger pain than it needs to be. They really seem to be going overboard on trying to make the system as secure as Fort Knox. Now they are releasing updates WEEKLY instead of monthly, which in my opinion is too often.

If you have an old phone cord, you can cut it and then connect any 12 volt adapter to the Red (positive) and Green (negative) wires and plug it into the Escort, and then update your detector at your computer.

By the way, on another note, a judge in Fort Worth was arrested a few weeks ago on DWI charges.

Last week, another judge threw the case out and dismissed the charges totally, on a "technicality" and then suppressed the evidence in the case.

I've been happy with my 9500ix from day one.

Escort did not offer a 110v-12v converter when they first sold the 9500ix, (Doesn't come with a USB cable either). I figured that out before I ordered it by reading the information on their website. USB cable is the same as I use on my Garmin 2730's and I ordered an 110v-12v converter from GPSCity and got that in the mail the next day.

I did have a bit of a problem with my database subscription after my free trial period ran out, but a couple of emails and Escort had me all fixed up. I think having to enter the database code every time you download an update is overkill, but my Browser remembers this key for me, so no big deal.

The new weekly update I think is also a bit of overkill, but they do tell you which states are updated so I have not bothered to download any of them since the beginning of January, (No Updates for California).

One ridiculous "Security" measure they have is disallowing a 2nd download of the database update. I downloaded at work one day and was going to update on my lunch break but did not get to it. Got home and was unable to download the update, was told I had already done the download. Now that is just stupid. What if I had a bad download or had accidentally erased the first download. Who cares if I download it once or 300 times???

Other than that, I love the 9500ix, HUGE improvement over my 8500 X50 and it was pretty good!

Topster, If you are still dissatisfied with your 9500ix I will be glad to take it off your hands, name a price and we can negotiate... I don’t find it to be anywhere near the PIA that you make it out to be…

Connecticut Radar and Laser Jammer laws

What law in Connecticut makes it legal for police confiscate a Radar/Laser Detector?
