I think your going to be disappointed, the leafs may start to change but the colors don't really come out till the end of Sept, to the middle of October. This is dependent on temerature and the amount of rain. Although New England has had there share of rain this year. :?
the swamp maples and highest elevations and most northern regions are just starting to show a little color now; it's still early.
Your best bet would be the Moosehead/Rangely/Connecticut Lakes in Maine and New Hampshire; and the White Mountains. You'll see spotty areas of bright reds and oranges, a hint of what will come later in the month and into Octovber.
