I took my wife to movies on Saturday night to see Casino Royale (great movie 5 stars from us) up in Boca Raton on 441. The movie parking lot was full so I dropped her off and drove over to the other side of the mall to get a parking place. I parked my car and started to walk across the lot. As I did 2 guys in a Volkswagen Jetta came down the row. I saw them and they kept aiming the car at me. Turning toward me as I walked. They may have been going 10-15 MPH. Finally he comes right up to me with his left front fender and wants to know why I couldn't get out of his way. I told him that pedestrians have the right of way and it seemed like he was aiming for me. At that, he turned his front wheels right at me and moved up. (Now comes the stupid part by me). I took the palm of my hand and smashed his mirror. He started screaming. I walked behind their car as they got out. The passenger was about 6'6" and dressed in long gym pants and a sleeveless gym shirt. I am thinking that now I have really done it. Gonna get a major butt kicking over something stupid.

Right then the mall security guy drove up. I told him I didn't have time to discuss it and went on to the movie. So do you think these 2 guys were up to something?

All I can say is that the decision to smash his mirror wasn't made by me but it came from somewhere deep down inside. I guess I was hoping to distract them off of their original plan.

I know I will get some responses that say I should carry a gun. But if I had I think I would have shot somebody.

I think this board is causing some anger management issues.

Sounds like you should have rode to Two Egg on Saturday to relieve some of that pent-up anger.

I'm glad it didn't go any further and really glad your wife was out of harms way. It is very easy to quickly get in over your head. I can see why you did what you did but "discretion is the better part of valor". In these days people think nothing of beating someone badly or worse. Think of all you have to lose compared to a small victory.

Except I think they were fully intending to rob me.

I think they were after your popcorn money and they probably wouldn't have minded beating you to get it.

Glad you are safe and I think you are really lucky. Did you go buy a lotto ticket? If not you missed your big chance.

I think if you are going to be traveling in dangerous places like a mall parking lot, you should have invited Lamont with you :D :D!

Anytime it takes somebody 5 minutes to get all of them out of the car you have a problem. 6" 8", Hal you should pickem a little smaller! Younger people today do not have our values. A lot of them think nothing of shooting someone for a watch. Our mentality is to beat someone until they learn mammers. You got lucky either way. If you would have had a weapon you would have been inclined to use it and if they had just been a couple of kids out looking for a parking space you would have made a horrible mistake. On the other hand if they were looking for trouble they had already picked you for their "Mark" which is what it sounds like to me since they made an aggressive move toward you with their car I think the Security Guard showed up at a good time. If they weren't looking for trouble they would have pressed charges for the broken mirror. While on that subject if you are going to continue with that disposition may I suggest

I bet they were going to rob you. These days you have to always be aware of who and what is going on all around you. I am just glad to hear everything turned out alright for both you and your wife!!!

Hal,

Sounds like you handled it about the best you could. There is a fine line between being unnecessarily aggressive, and protecting yourself and I wouldn't even try to second guess your decision. Your gut reactions are many times the correct ones.

Some folks just go around looking for trouble, and it sounds to me like they found it. Maybe next time they will think twice about acting aggressive toward someone else.

THIS really surprises me.
You distroyed property (mirror) and they (security) let you go?
I guess it all depends on how much the security guy witness from all this
and took it from there.

Either way Hal, glad it turn out in your favor.

He didn't witness anything. I think he just heard the yelling from a distance. I wasn't gonna stand there with an unarmed security guy while these guys were still present. The security guy could have asked me to stay (he didn't and I wouldn't have stayed anyway but if he had asked I would have told him where I was going to be where he could find me).

forget the mirror, should have reached in and punched the driver five times as fast as you could, ran around to the passenger side and smacked the passenger, when the passenger asked why you did that, tell him that's when your tell the driver, man I wished he'd done that to me.

Tis the season :xmas1: , everyone needs to be extra careful out today, thugs are looking for marks and know or think everyone out right now has extra money for shopping ( Christmas)..

Probably should have kept walking and said sorry without making eye contact, but never know what people are up to now days, might not have made any difference, seams they wore looking for trouble or easy money.

I would have done something stupid....that's just me...

Hal,

Glad that you did not have a gun. Remind me to tell you about a situation I had a while back, and I did have a gun (still do).

I never second guess my "gut" reaction. Seems that your situation worked out fine.

With all the drugged up butt holes in the world, robbery is a great possibility, or it could have been an initiation or just sheer bravado on the bad guys part. It seemed to work out in your favor. However the next guy that breaks their miroir, just might get shot!

Robbery: When i was in the retail business, seems that we were always on a higher alert for robberies and missing money or assets. Usually, it was our friendly employees that became accountable for most losses. Best part was when the police, their lawyers or the DA's office would remind us that it was the Holiday Season and did we really want to carry through with pressing charges? Damn straight we did.

Glad that it all worked out, and that you got to see a great movie with your "Best Friend"

He effectively had blocked my path and with his wheels turned towards me I thought he would pull into me if I moved. So I think the mirror was a good diversion to get his mind off of whatever he was thinking.

Thats where a tazer gun would have come in handy. Hit them with it and go in and watch your movie. Had you been a smaller guy like me things might have not turned out as well as they had.

In this new world of people who do not care about human life I think that I would have walked away briskly and not looked back!! You hear stories all the time of people getting the s*&t beat out of them for no good reason, all these punks need is a victim.... You will always come out on the losing end as these punks only work in groups and will stomp you to death.... Glad your safe..

This could have ruined the Thanksgiving week sale Hal, pick on the punks AFTER the sale!!

ok, This is what I would have done........and I do carry a firearm

1) as you saw them come towards you, you should have cut between car and moved to another row to put distance between you and them. Also pick up the pace, don't run, put pick up the pace and keep your head up and keep track of there location....distance is your friend

2) If cut off, now you have a problem. You need to get *SOMEONES*attention.....yell fire, or rape(even if your in a parking lot) never yell help, no one will respond.

3) get so close that they can't open the door.(unless they have a knife, then run like crazy) I don't care how big they are, you have the leverage.

4) If possible run away, if they pursue you, thats when I would turn and open fire.

But thats just me, I sure am glad your we not hurt
