I have a guy coming by to pick up the VTX tomorrow....I loved it for the 2 years I had it, but the test ride on the Wing a couple of months ago sold me on it (by the way, if anyone knows the best place to buy a new Wing in central NC, let me know cause I am shopping for best price as we speak...ready to buy right now).
Anyway, I am looking for a black one. Had initially planned to get one with the cold weather package...from what I have heard, they are hard to come by without getting Navigation. Had planned to go that route, but saw a guy with a Wing a few weeks ago with a Lowrance Navigation/MP3 player, etc, and it looked very cool. Since I have heard some mixed reviews on the heated seat anyway, I don't think I am going to pony up the $2000 for Navigation/cold weather if I can just get a premium audio 06 model, and add the Lowrance navigation unit.
I am only 5' 8", with a 30" inseam. I can touch the ground with both feet, but only on my toes. Are there any other short riders out there with tips on how you handle it?
Also, with my stature, will I need to look into pull back risers for the handlebars?
I am thinking of getting the factory fog lights installed at the dealer...is this option worth it for most of you? (I have heard the headlights on the bike are impressive on their own).
I know on the bike I rode a few weeks ago was loaded....had the navigation package. When you opened any of the trunks, the display told you they were open..does the standard Wing do this?
Finally, any recommendations on aftermarket navigation units? The gentleman I met a few weeks ago loved his Lowrance, but I did not get the model number from him.
Sorry for all the questions...just a little excited. :D

new wing

I just bought my 06 last thursday and Southern Powersports in Chattanooga TN. They had the best price I could find, got mine in gold however there were several "black" premi audio's on the floor. They have a website just google for it. I passed on the more "upscale" versions. I too didn't like how the Nav system worked and will buy a garmin when it is time to get a gps system.

At 5'7" w 29" inseam and I can "almost" flat foot the bike and if I lean forwards just a litte both feet are flat on the ground.

I put only the "spoiler" on the trunk and pegs on the forward bars for comfort from the dealer. I have ordered a backrest, risers and cupholders for wife and I...

came off a 06 HD UC and this wing is totally awesome!

I have put numerous options on my 06 Wing but my favorites have to be a Utopia Backrest and Mick-O-Peg highway pegs. I did get the foglights installed at the dealer but the standard wing lights are impressive. Most of my other additions were cosmetic and I would recommend the spoiler as I think it looks so much better with then without. Just enjoy your wing but if I had to just get one accessory it would be the Utopia backrest.

Good Luck,

James

You will probably need to install the "Reg Risers" on the Wing. HDL has them and they are very comfortable for reducing the arm reach.

The bright lights on the Wing are like the lights on the front of a freight train. Very bright. IMO, fog lights aren't necessary for cars to see you.

You can lower the suspension on the bike with the touch of your finger to enable you to put both feet flat on the ground or at least close to flat footed.

The standard model will inform you on the info read out screen if one of the side bags or trunk is not properly latched.

Install a separate 12 volt 15 amp power plug fused directly from the battery. This will enable you to charge cell phones, run an air compressor or plug in your GPS, etc. The standard power plug wires with connector behind the left hand fairing pocket is only a 5 amp set up. Not enough power to run a compressor. It is nice to have a compressor stored in the little space under the rear trunk floor and be able to pull it out, plug it in and air up a repaired tire on the road.

Yes it does.....way too often I might add......you'll see what I mean!

I'd suggest getting the spoiler and the Kissan Tail blazer for the light in it. Flashes for four seconds slowly then faster till it goes steady (while the brake is depressed anyway). I liked that idea for amore visual "see me I got the brakes on" thing. Just got mine in July and am having a great time with it. Check out the Zumo 550 GPS made for motorcyclists if you're into GPS's. Also the CB(plus Mic Mutes) is a must if you plan to ride with a group. Expensive, but worth it.

I picked up my 06 on July 18 from Honda of Russellville in Russellville,AR for 16000. Of course, I had to pay tax on top of that when I got home. The only thing I have added so far is the spoiler and exhaust turndowns. The ride home was 490 miles. Before I picked it up I had planned on adding hi-way pegs, backrest, and the risers. However, I find it comfortable as it is. I would recommend that you ride it first and then decide what you need after that. You might check out the classified section on this board to see if you could pick up a used one. I found an 05 in my local paper for 15000. It had 8000 miles. If I had not already bought new I would have been tempted to get that one.\

New wing shopping

:D Congrats on your about to be new Wing purchase. Picked up my 06 Audio/comfort/NAV from a HONDA dealer in Sanford NC. Great service. There is suposed to be a Wing dealer 30 miles south of Fayetteville NC in Lumberton along I-95 south. Haven't been there but would consider/contact if possible. The Chatanooga area will be hard to beat $$ though. TULSA belly pan is a nice add on and will help prevent undercarriage damage. I am in Iraq at present and the better half is guarding our new wing. 5 guns and 4 dogs with attitudes...ought to be safe. Ordering a few items to add later myself. Opted not to go the factory fog lights, instead went with EC Platinum 55 watt H-3 bulbs. SilverStar bulbs will work fine in them. That decision was based not on cost alone but threads from this site. Great wealth of knowledge I have found here.

Get it, ride it, research it, check this site often  and then add the pretties. :p

First off, congrats on the new ride ( or soon to be)....having owned three 1800s and put a lot of stuff on them, if I ( and I mean me) were to do it over again my list would be rather short compared to ther others I've owned.

1st- a good backrest, some like the Utopia, I liked the Krome Werks because I could remove it and not leave any clue that it was there, mounts to the passenger arm rests...

2nd- Reg risers, they'll move the bars a little higher and closer to you, nice....

3rd-Fog Lamps, I would go with the yellow(amber) ones, you are right, the headlights are great as is, so the yellow is for being seen, not to see with...I had these on all mine and got a lot of comments " man, we could see you coming".

4th- CB for riding with others.

5th-Spoiler and NO RACK!!!! rack and spoiler are a little heavy on the trunk lid and I like the looks of just the spoiler. easier to clean around too.

6th-Trailer hitch, you know your gonna get one... :D

7th-Mic-O-Pegs are about the best, pricy, but you get what you pay for and his customer service is the best.

8th-Skip the CD changer and go with mp3 player, GPS/I like the Garmin units, 2720 or 2730 work great....

That's a short list, I went way overboard on mine and wished I hadn't....check out bikes in you area and see what they have on theirs, get some ideas before you buy things, do a little rearch first , this board is great and you'll get a lot of information, sometime system overload....

Just ask, most here a very smart cookies and know about all there is on the Wing and what works....

If you simply apply ALL of the options, then you won't languish over which you should have or still want to get!!

If you buy anything chrome, the anti-chrome police (Hedo & co.) will haunt you.

Why not ride it 'naked' for awhile, then decide which comfort and convenience items you determine you might want to try? Save the glitter items for Christmas gifts from the family.

I think some of us will reluctantly admit to spending money on items that we didn't really need, they didn't work or appear as intended, or we didn't actually use. Do your homework and search for pros/cons on types of products AND even brand names of specific add ons.

Relax and ride. All good things will soon occur.

When I ordered my '06, I had the dealer install everything that I wanted under warranty and that I did not want to take a chance on breaking during install. Anything they install is covered by Honda for three years and not the manufacturer's warranty. You can do all the installs yourself (I did on my '05) unless you don't want to mess with drilling, etc.

Anyway, you might want to have the dealer install the spoiler and the CB antenna (if you think you will get a CB later) and anything else that might require drilling or a lot of disassembly, maybe the 12 volt outlet in the left fairing pocket, fog lights, etc.

The first thing you should order is a Tulsa belly pan. You will be surprised how much this will save the bottom of the bike from damage.

GRIZZ

I purchased mine at the dealer in Charlotte last Sept. I felt like I got a good price, plus they were very good with the little after purchase issues that will always be there. It was a little hassle to take it to Charlotte the two times I had to, but they were great, and it had to be done.

I now deal exclusively with Team Powersports in Garner.

They have a Gold Wing Cafe. Any after market chrome stuff you buy there, they install for free. They roll the bike into the showroom floor and an older man who is a walking, talking Gold Wing expert does the work. You sit at the Cafe and drink the free coffee and watch.
They are all great folks.

Give them a try. Even if you purchase elsewhere, you can have them do service.

I found my best deal at Southern Power Sports also. Their web address is www.southernhonda.com. BUT! If you make a deposit, make them give you a receipt. I didn’t insist on one and ended up paying $500 more when I picked up the bike 2 months later. Last April. The sales guy (Aaron Roberson) wouldn’t give me a straight answer on anything after I made the deposit.
The only option I had them install was a spoiler and like it very much. OH! I did buy a set of bag liners also and they charged me $10 for the “installation”. LOL! That was almost as good as the trunk net that was on back order and shipped to my home a couple of weeks later. $5 installation charge.

Anyway, since then I have installed;
1. Hondaline CB radio and antenna. A pain to install but well worth it. I HAVE to have one. ($680 from the internet. Compare with the dealer price.) Buy the way, don’t follow the instructions and remove the trunk. There’s no need.
2. Genuine Honda service manual. (I should have listed this as #1!)
3. Kury luggage rack #7151. It’s aluminum. The previously mentioned weight problem of the rack itself is not a factor in my opinion but I DO NOT store ANYTHING but light stuff there. There are several obvious buff marks in it but it stills looks good. I had to return the first one because of hundreds of little bumps caused by the rack not being properly cleaned before plating but it was promptly replaced by WingStuff.
4. Kury luggage rack bag # 4162. Doesn’t attach to the Kury rack perfectly but has a really neat attached rain cover and looks good. I would buy again. .
5. Electrical Connection “Platinum Series” fog lights. They have a flat, VERY wide beam and are awesomely bright. Use these along with the stock Honda “brights” and every thing in front of you on those back roads will think the Sun is rising.
6. Front fender extension from Big Bike Parts #52655. It saves my paint and a lot of cleaning time.
7. Kury LED mirror light kit #7513. They look great but I wish they blended with the mirrors better. The square edges are not “Goldwing’ish”.
8. Big Bike Parts Running Light Converter # 52734. It makes your spoiler brake light function as a running light and brake light. Plug & ride. Worth $16 IMO.
9. Kury Ergo II peg set # 4056. Great road pegs but they need to make the 4½” arms standard, not the 6”.
10. Kury “Stealth” lights # 7312. Love’um. They look good and function as both running lights and turn signals.
11. Hondaline passenger audio control.
12. J&M Dash Mat. It has a pocket for your radar detector.
13. Hondaline DC accessory socket kit. It’s low voltage but installs easily and lets me charge my camera batteries and phone while riding.
14. Hondaline Deluxe bag mats. A must IMO.
15. Hondaline trunk light harness.
16. Big Bike Parts trunk vanity mirror # 52-603.
17. Big Bike Parts Clear Lens LED/Chrome saddlebags and trunk inserts. BBP #’s 52-731 & 52-732. You have to splice the wiring on installation but it’s not hard and they look great.
18. Kury “Transformer” passenger floorboards. Fit-up quality is lacking but the design and looks are great.
19. Kury license plate area trim with lights # 3135. Don’t leave home without it.

Sorry for the lengthy response. This is just what I did. There are many here with more Goldwing experience and better knowledge than I.
I’ve done my share of touring but I’ve only owned a Wing since April ’06.
Good riding however you decide to equip it!

Nothing Left to Buy

In my opinion, this bike needs nothing. There is nothing wrong with buying gifts, such as flowers or chocolate, but other than that, this bike is missing nothing. If you want to spend money, spend it on yourself. Best jacket, best gloves, best helmet; but after that there is nothing else you will need.

Make sure you drop by Wings over the Smokies

http://www.gwrranc.org/wos2006.htm

And go to Hal's BBQ for your first set of add-ons...

http://www.gl1800riders.com/forums/view ... hp?t=64189

And, last but not least, go to the parking lot party at the Red Roof Inn.

Try to avoid buying anything from a dealer - (Hal being the exception that proves the rule)... You can generally get everything much cheaper on-line, and you can install just about everything yourself. If you can't install it yourself, there are plenty of people around who will be happy to help you get it installed, without having to spend the shop rates.
