Hello all.....new to the forum. I purchased my father-in-laws 2008 wing. It still has 4.3 on the nav and I need a link to I believe the newest 5.1 if anyone could help me out. Been researching up grades and trying to figure the best way to get the newest maps/etc. Thanks for any help.
I am in a similar situation... just picked up a 2008, featuring FW2.21 I live in Ontario, Canada. Can I get a copy of the FW file?

If you have FW 4.3 than you need FW5.1. Are you in French Canada and need or want map info in French ?
I can help you with FW5.1.

My Canadian friends say yes. I don't know if any of the Canadians I have helped when from 2.11 to 5.1. But I can't say for sure.

Someone here maybe able to answer that question.

regarding the maps, i went to the BBBike site, and downloaded a ZIP file of an Ontario map. It icontains an IMG file (gmapssup.img) ... do I need to recompile it somehow, or do I simply need to add it to the CF card, as is?

I would say you need to unzip the gmapsupp.img and place it on the CF Card but make sure to put it in the folder named GARMIN. Also, make sure that it doesn't come close to 2gb in size as that's the upper limit that these navi systems will accept. As long as it's an unlocked file, it should work just fine.

First, I would get a second CF Card and copy the OEM card over to it. Or make a good backup copy of the OEM card. That way you can go back to what you have if there are issues.
Now,
1. As stated, unzip the file and copy it to the Garmin folder on the card.
2. Carefully install the CF card in the nav unit and turn the ignition to acc. Be careful. Too many of us have bent pins, not good.
3. Watch the bottom of the display as the nav boots up. You may see loading maps or maps locked or nothing at all.
I may not have listed the exact messages. Sorry, it has been awhile since I did one myself. If you see maps locked, PM me.
4. When the nav boots up, press Menu, System Info and look at what maps are loaded.
If all looks good, zoom in on your street and check the name. If you can and see your street and the full street name, you are good.
My concern is, your FW may be too old for the newer maps. Some 2006 - 2008 US and 2006 - 2010 Canadian bikes have issues with maps newer than 2022.25.
If you have any issues, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the great support. Going to BBBike extracts site for a new map ... but which is the correct format of Garmin map to download? I'll give that a go first (waiting for the CF Flash card readrer to come in the mail... not that common of a device anymore). If it doesnt work, then I'll do the FW update.

Thanks!

So, i suppose the question I have for this forum... can I update my Canadian FW version (2.2x) to a USA version (5.10), and then make use of the newest maps. I dont mind losing the French language capabilities inherent in the Canadian FW...

My friends in Canada have updated to the 5.1 firmware with no ill effects. But I have no first-hand experience myself.
What firmware are you running now ? I do know that you can go back to an older version if you need to.

Rygar
Where did you get your dates ? 4.31 came out before 2010, but, may have been upgraded to 4.50 in 2010.
