Must sees: Cades Cove, but only if you can take the loop with no one else around. Ober Gatlinburg and if you would rather ride the bike than the tram, you can drive up Ski Mountain Rd. Lots of great riding, and if you want to cool off, they have a couple of river rafting (tubing) places near Townsend. We had our best meals in the heart of town at a place called Blaines (?), and at the little biker bar near the park entrance. Nice area, once you get thru Pidgeon Forge.. You'll like this trip!!

(We didn't camp)

I live just across the mountain from Gatlinburg and I can tell you, that is not the the place to be if your main interest is riding. Traffic is absolutly terrible and the heat is awful. If you like camping you need to ride over to the Blueridge Motorcycle Campground in Cruso NC which is near Waynesville NC. That is the best motorcycle campground I have ever stayed at and you can not run out of roads to ride. If you have any questions about it just pm me and I'll be glad to help.

There are a number of great campgrounds in the area. I really like staying at a little spot that I think is called "Camping in the Smokies", its located about 5 miles outside of town on 321. Its small, clean showers, and quiet.

Clingmans Dome is neat, if the weather is perfect. Most of the time it is clouded in. If you like casinos, there is a nice one in Cherokee North Carolina. If you like history, on the North Carolina side of the smokies on 441, they have a cool working pioneer village. Even have Elk in the fields.

Like to hike? There are paved hiking trails that go back to some awesome waterfalls. Going in August, if they have a dry summer, may not be much water, but still beautifull none the less.

Two rides that I think are "must do's" are the two foothills parkways. I love to ride over the mountain from Gatlinburg over to Cherokee. Just before Cherokee, get on the Blue Ridge Parkway and go north to highway 19. From there, go north through Maggie Valley and pick up interstate 40 West. For an interstate, it is a beautiful ride. Just after you cross back into Tn., (exit 443) pick up a section of the foothills parkway, and it will drop you off on 321, which will take you right back in to Gatlinburg.

Another great ride is from Gatlinburg, as soon as you leave town you enter the park. Within about of a mile, there is a visitors center. Turn to the right, and follow that road around to Cades Cove. After leaving Cades Cove, keep going on through Townsend on 321. About 6 or 7 miles out of Townsend, you can get on the second section of Foothills Parkway. It is such a beautiful ride, you can ride it to the end and turn around and ride it back, pick up 321 again and ride straight back to Pigeon Fordge.

If you want to ride the Tail of the Dragon (Deals Gap), when you get to the end of the second foothills parkway mentioned above, you are less than two miles from the begining. Instead of turning around and heading back, turn left at the stop sign on 129.

If you want to do an all day ride, leave the Gatlinburg area on 321 towards Townsend. Do the Foothills Parkway, turn on to 129 and do Deals Gap. After you do the dragon, take 28 around to 19, 19 Through Maggie Vally around the interstate, do the the second section of the foothills as described above. As mentioned, that will drop you off on 321, which you can take back to Gatlinburg. Its about 200 mile round trip, but with the view and speed limits in different areas, it will take you all day.

Last one that I will mention, if you do Deals Gap, another great ride is to stay on 129 towards Robbinsonville and take the Cherohola Skyway over to Tellico Plains.

There are tons and tons of great roads to ride in the Gatlinburg area.

Hope this helps.

Take a look at this page: http://jkgraphics.com/Eagle/smoky_routes.html

I made up these routes for the Smoky Mountain Ride In. While all of the routes begin and end at the Ridge Top Motel in Bryson City, you can still use the map, (or download the .gdb file if you have a Garmin GPS and MapSource), and follow some of these routes.

Listen to what the others are saying about Gatlinburg, Cades Cove, Clingsman Dome and 441 through the Smokies. You seriously need to get out of town and ride some of the other roads. I grew up in Knoxville and what the others are saying is very true.

Get in touch with WimpyHonda and TnCharlie. They both live up there and will drag you all over East Tennessee and show you some very cool Out-Of-The-Way places you might not otherwise see.

First don't stay in Gatlinburg. Stay in Townsend and rent a cabin. Personally I think Gatlinburg has hit the crapper. Not quite as nice as it used to be. IMHO.

Like said above. Cades Cove, esp early or morning or later in the day for the wildlife. For a day of riding go do the Foothills parkway, turn left and you're on the dragon. eat lunch at the Gas Station. Go left out of the station, and you're on the Hellbender. Go back to Robinsville, and Take the Cherohala (best road!! fun!!) to Tellico Plains, (I'll have to get back to you on the road numbers to get back to the foothills, but GREAT riding!

Good luck!

I agree with what others say about Gatlinburg. If I were you I would come out of Gatlinburg and hit wears valley road and that will put you in townsend from there you could go to the right and access the Foothills Parkway and the Gap (The Dragon) and then take 129-hwy 143 and over the Skyway back to Hwy 360 which will take you to Vonore and then turn right again and you will be on your way back to Maryville so you can head back to Gatlinburg.
If you want more routes let me know. I am a local to the area and I know where the good places to eat are..

RV Camping near Gatlinburg

I live in Sevierville and have a friend named Rex who owns Riverbend Campground in Pigeon Forge. It is strickly for RV campers but is very nice and well kept. He and I both ride. There are some good rides listed in this post. From his campground you can easily reach Wears Valley Road which will lead you to most of the rides listed on this post (exception being the Blue Ridge) Let me know if you want to chat about your visit....

IF you do stay in Gatlinburg my only input would be to have breakfast at "The Log Cabin Pancake House." I don't know the street name but it's the same one as the Space Needle, which you can see from anywhere in Gatlinburg.

+1 also contact Boxmaker. Three local guys that will put more good roads on you than you'll have time to ride in one visit.
