Hello all..I am talking to an upholer about working on my seat..Cutting some foam out on the sides ,reshape the seat.& he also stated that on the bottom of the seat we could replace some of the foam with better foam & insert a gel pad. for the back side ..Has anyone ever had a seat with a gel pad inserted..& what are the pros & cons?..Thanks..

Good to see you last Sat.......

You having it done or sending it off? I'd like to have something done to mine as well without spending $1000 bucks. You ask a good question.......I wonder how gel would hold up over time:shrug:

Like wise bent..localy..the upholster is very well known for his work..he has about 8 antique cars right now waiting for his work,,he said about 150.00 so i am most likely going to try ot for that price..but wanted to see if anyone had experince with it ..i could always go with jut abetter grade of foam..

As far as the Gel seat is concerned, my wife had one a while ago, and she no longer uses it. It is lying around in the garage somewhere, and will stay there.
The Gel holds the heat of the sun, like you wouldn't believe. The first time she found that out, we had been in a restaurant for lunch, and my wife almost jumped off the bike as I was riding off the parking lot!! We had to find a cool supply of water to soak the seat in before she would even get near the bike again !!
We found that other seat inserts, like 'AirHawk" are cheaper and far superior to the gel seat that we bought from a supplier that specialises in Motorcycle gel seats! I personally use a Walmark 'auto cushion' for the rider's seat, and like it far better than the expensive gel seat. That was about $120, while the Walmart one was about $17.

Try and get a 'sample' seat from the shop that sells them, and try it for a few days in the hot sun. You won't try it for very long !!

Good luck in your search, and above all, enjoy the ride!

Harry.

I was thinking the same thing about the sun..but then started to think..If we inserted the gel pad & the covered it with about 1/2 inch of foam & recovered it..That it may not be so bad..
How was your gel pad done, inserted into the seat or just as a seat pad?..Thanks..

Hi mr scootinn.

We had the seat as a cushion type, that anchored to the existing seat with 4 tie-ons, but the gel was covered with a soft towel material. The gel was between 1/2 and 3/4 inches thick.
It did not move around, but was just not what we wanted.

The last time we used it was when my wife got off the bike at a stop, and told me that she couldn't ride with that any longer, and she would walk home !! That's about 275 miles !!!

We did get her home on the bike, with added padding bought at a store.

Harry.

Hang in there Bev, you can do it !!

Gelling

While I didn't have the insert, on a previous bike I bought and used a 2" gel pad. Like someone said earlier in direct sun it is brutal. I ended up hardly using the $100 or so pad. If you garaged it and never left it open to the suns rays it may be ok for you. You didn't list what state you are from, I am in the southeast so although it usually only gets to about 95 as a high that can make for a HOT seat...

Tried the gel seat pad, gel seat pad with wool, beads... I got a 'long hair' wool pelt at Honda Homecoming in '06. Best I've ever had. Soft, cool, good for long rides!

Forget the Gel Pad insert idea, it's a bad one and not anywhere close to being comfortable like it might sound. A gel pad is really pretty hard and needs more in the way quite a bit of comfort padding to soften it the overall feel. I had a Gel Pad insert put in about 5 years ago thinking it would add to my long distance riding, but quickly found out that I had a reially hard seat.

Spend your money on something like a Russell Day Long seat done by people who know motorcycle seats and have a great reputation and a good guarantee. Forget the Gel Pad idea. IMO it's not a good one!!!!

Gel pads were inserted below the Honda foam after the shell was carved out to accommodate the added gel pad.

My ProPad is also hot, therefore I don't use it. I thinks it has some type of gel in it, but I am not certain.
Ride safely,

Here ya go. If you like the gel pads you may want to try this. No need to have a new seat built every time you buy a new bike, and should be great for those that own and ride more than one bike. Myself...I don't think sooo!

OK seriously. I have had one seat worked on, and have another down at my local upholster getting reshaped and diamond tucked. His recommendation is not to use a gel pad. It will not improve the comfort. Of course in my case he said the # 1 thing I could do for seat comfort is to drop about 40 lbs.

Oh, I'd believe it - I found out the hard way.

I am using the Wal-Mart gel cushion and now whenever I stop I take it off and put it in the trunk.

I had a hartco on the last bike and that was no good so I didnt want to go that route
I had a local upolstering guy do mine this time first he did more foam and a gel insert, his thinking was after the foam crushed down the gel would take over, that didnt work for me. I have tail bone issues, then we added more foam and cut out for the tail bone now alls good cost was 160.00
