Has anyone ever seen a display for the GL1800 to show the Gear position on a Display of some sort ? Looks like there is an output on the Gear Position switch for each Gear Position. Sends Ground to OD light and sends Ground to Neutral Light. Sending a Ground to a Display should be simple. Steve

They are available; check Wingstuff (I think).

DS gear indicator

I have the DS model small one in red. From wingstuff.
its been great. I mounted mine behind the speaker grill you can see it clearly.
Wouldn't be without it now.
the bike has to be in gear and the clutch out a bit before it reads but you soon get used to that.
really good when you lose track of where you are.

cheers

Same here, love mine. Just ignore all the comments about not needing one.

Gear

A gear indicator would be nice to have. However, something I found on this board that is useful is the following. At 2000 RPM in 2nd gear your approximate speed is 20 MPH, in 3rd it is 30 MPH, in 4th it is 40 MPH, and in fifth the top gear light is on whatever the RPM.

I used to say that I didn't need a gear indicator and, for the most part, that was the case. Having said that, I have since learned the utility of having a gear indicator, especially when you have 6 gears. They are nice to have - not necessary but very nice.

I have the HealTech DS Series GIpro. I mounted it on the dash panel, here:

It plugs into the DLC (Data Link Connector), typically called a diagnostic connector under the seat, here:

It's either a square red 4-pin connector with a red cap on it, or a square white 4-pin connector with a red cap on it (depending on your model year).

My 1987 GL1200 Aspencade came from the factory with a gear position indicator that displays all gears. Come on mother Honda, put one back on your flagship model!

I know the RPM vs speed trick to determine gear, but I just like having the display.

:joke::joke::joke::joke:My 2012 came with one. It is an OD light that comes on when I'm in 5th. OD what a joke!

Why does any experienced rider need to know which gear they are in???????? If it is lugging - downshift...... If RPM too high for the gear you are in - upshift. All I want to know is when I am in neutral....only

This question comes up every time someone makes a post about gear position indicators.

I've been riding for 49 years, and yes I can figure out from the RPM what gear I'm in. That said, I still really like having one. There are times when I've got the clutch pulled in, say when I'm in third or forth gear while slowing or preparing for an entry or turn, etc. and I forget at the moment which of those two gears I'm in (no RPM indication with clutch pulled in). I'd kind of like to know which gear it is before I let the clutch out!

That's just one example. There are other times as well when I'd like to have the gear position indicated on the dash.

Do I NEED it, no. Do I LIKE having it, yes.

There is a gear position sensor on the GL1800. It would not have cost much more at all to replace the N and OD displays with a 1-N-2-3-4-5 display on the dash. Just sayin'...

YMMV

Does anybody have any info on a good gear indicator,,,,,I have a 2007 gl1800
Just a short time ago there was a thread discussion on the gear indicator complete with links to several options. just look down through today's list of threads and you'll find it. I'd post a link but I cannot even get return to work.

On my 05 I have mine mounted to the right of the speedometer just under the 140 as there no indicators there to block. And also full well knowing that I'll never come no where close to that speed, lol.
