Can anyone give me advise on good (reasonably priced) helmet headsets. I am a first time buyer of a goldwing. Just traded in a 2006 Shadow Aero for a 2006 with premium audio. No nothing about headsets.

Ted... welcome to the Gold Wing world!

But... you just dropped $20G & change into a motorcycle, and you're looking for "reasonably priced" headsets?

You should know by now that rarely is there anything that's 'good' for a motorcyle available for a 'reasonable price'.

Ok... just having some fun with ya. Seriously, I'm partial to the J&M Audio headsets... of which there are different quailities available.

Others here on the board are partial to Ed-Sets, which I understand work well too.

And then there are always the small ear-buds... either generic fit, or custom moulded for your ear.

Each have their advantages & disadvantages, and I'm sure the others will weigh in with their preferences.

:)

Tom,

Thanks for the info. I'm new to GL1800 and just realized I should have first looked into the GPS/MP3/Electronic devices forum.

Yep, funds are now low. That's why I'm trying to get something reasonable. :D

I asked guy at dealership for info and as I figured he recommended Honda's set at $218 something.

Ted...first of all...WELCOME!!!

I didn't know Honda had a set...didn't find them anywhere. My dealer offered the J&M set but it was the J&M standard set. Because I lurked on this forum I opted for the J&M Elite series helmet headset (HS-ECD584-OF)...they are expensive...but also very good in my opinion. Here is a link about them from th J&M site...

Good Luck with your new wing...by the way everything is expensive with the Goldwing... :)

TED I put the Edsets in my helmet and in the wifes'. We also use tthe Challenger molded ear plugs this is a most awsome set up. Instead of an audio setting of 8 -10 on volume we use 2 and can in fact hear important environmental sounds (like sirens and emergency vehicles) while cutting out the annoying road sounds. WE love our ED'S

Welcome aboard Ted. I had some cheap Chatterbox ones when I bought my bike, and they sounded like I was listening to music and CB talk through a tin can with a piece of string. The other riders in my group could barely hear me on the CB too.
At Americade this year I had the opportunity to listen to a couple of different options and we decided to go with the J&M Elite series. The difference is night and day. The quality of the music is incredible, like you are listening to your headphones on your home stereo. I also run XM and with the digital music its amazing. All my buddies I ride with say that my voice comes booming in through the CB too, which is a real added bonus. They are not cheap, but they are worth every penny IMHO.

I use a mp3 player wired into the AUX outlet. I don't have a need for CB either so I just use $39 Sony earbuds:

Connected into the wing with$29 Ed sets ear buddy:

The headphone cord is long enough to go under my jacket and plug into the wing on the dash. I also like how the cord is long on the right side so you just wrap it behind your neck into your right ear so its not dangling from your neck (dums guys is smarts)
I've used these Sony earphones for years and they work/sound great and are VERY comfortable and fit great under helmet.
I got convinced last year to use $100 Etymotic E6i sound isolator/blocking earphones....OUCH those sucked and hurt, I didn't get too upset when they stopped working in 6mos and went back to my more comfortable and cheaper Sony. The Sony's also block alot (most) of the ambient/wind noise that you get on the wing (the reason I don't listen to the external 4 speakers).
If I had a passenger often and wanted to hear them babble while I was trying to enjoy my ride, I might let them convince me to get helmet speakers.
And I didn't plunk down MSRP for my wing, I got my '05 in '05 with 1k miles and a bunch of farkles added for wayyy under retail, buying used and farkled and not paying sales tax and dealer fees is the way to go!

Here's a vote for the Air Rider headsets. I have them mounted in the Nolan flip front helmets and they sound great. Also, NO wind noise coming through when the intercom is on.

I have had the J&M and Ed Sets and the Honda which are J&M. Personally I like the Ed Sets. That being said Speaker placement is THE most important factor in enjoying sounds on the wing. You need to get them as close to your ear as possible without getting in the way.

j&M Elite Series mounted in my Nolan flip face....wife and I are very happy with them...sounds great, no wind noise through the mics

Yes expensive but worth it.

Seems with the premium audio on the 2006 you can listen to the speakers for a bit while you save for a decent headset....I would caution about wasting $$$ on a cheap headset
