Helmet Hooks--Open of Closed?

5178 Views 53 Replies 45 Participants Last post by  Don767
I've been leaving my helmet hooks UN-hooked, un-locked, dangling down from the trunk. That way I can just hop off the bike, hook my helmet, close the hook and go. But ... I've never seen anyone else doing this.

Does leaving the helmet hooks open (hanging down) cause a problem?

Just wondering. Thanks.

Come to AZ and you will see another, only I seldom close 'em after hanging the helmet :). Life is too short to worry about protecting stuff from "the other".
Quite frankly, never had the need for helmet hooks. I just leave them closed. I don't think they have ever been opened, come to think of it.
I have chrome helmet hangers on mine so they stay closed until I want to use them.
I have Nolan helmets, and they need the little T extender thingies because they don't have D-rings. I started keeping them in the trunk, but then I had to dig them out every time I needed them. So I leave them on the hooks, and close the hooks.
That said, I kept them closed befroe I had the Nolans, too..

Also ride with Nolans so have the "T" things and keep them closed. Always did keep them closed before I got the Nolans. Also the chrome ones reflect the headlights back on cages behind me so I guess every little bit helps.
I hand-cuff them on the passengers hand hold
Never used them, I don't even know if they even work. I just lay the helmet on the back seat and cover it with my mesh jacket. Never had a problem with that.
Open makes life a little easier.
One open, one closed. Now you have it covered. :joke: That is usually how ours end up, not by design, but it is anyway. Never noticed any difference in ease of operation, so FWIW, no it doesn't matter.
Greetings!

Leaving the hooks open increases aerodynamic drag and decreases your fuel mileage. It also causes front end wobble and intermittent CB reception.
Helmet Hooks

I always keep mine closed and rarely ever use them.
What helmet hooks?
Hemut hooks??? What helmut hooks. Don't need no steenking helmut hooks????

Don't mention the impact that it has on the anti-dive valve! :22yikes:

Or the crush washer...:joke:
I thought those were for keeping spare crush washers !
Actually, I have some of those cool looking plastic "key fobs" hanging from them I got on a couple trips in other states...Myrtle Beach on one side & Arkansas on the other. BTW hasn't tore anything up back there so there must not be much turbulant air. Oh, yes I keep mine closed.
If traveling at night.

I hang two thumb-size led spot (flash) lights on them.
Let them fly in the wind
