Hit a Deer - But Not What You Think

I was about 5 miles from home on my way back from Rockies Gold 2025. It was just after dark. An oncoming car's headlights on a two lane road made the road SURFACE hard to see. I could see down the road just fine. Right as the car passed me, I saw a deer in the middle of the road that someone else had recently hit. For a split second, I thought to try to dodge it, then remembered the trailer. I didn't want to miss the deer with the bike and catch a trailer tire. That could have bounced the trailer around severely enough to cause me to lose control. I decided to gas on it it to let the forces at play be in my favor and to keep the trailer coupled tight to the bike. Both bike tires went over the carcass and I believe the trailer straddled it.

Arrived home safely and accessed the damages. I was glad I had gotten a belly pan. Both sides exhaust shields are the only damage sustained.

Gotta wash the bike to keep the flies from hovering around it. It sure stunk on the rest of the way home. Hot bike and deer flesh doesn't mix well.

Glad you are OK.
That was an accident waiting to happen.
If the trailer straddled the carcass did you ride over it from head to tail? That's impressive.(y)

It was a small deer and I think it was tail to head.

Yeah good that you are OK as that could have been much worse. Deer are my biggest safety concern up here in northern MN and as we are approaching the rutting season soon they become even more unpredictable but I just refrain from riding after sunset because of the increased deer activity and decrease in vision.
I doubt (know) that my Champion trailer wouldn't have sufficient clearance to straddle a grown deer w\o making contact but it's smooth enough that if the tires missed the carcass I'm pretty confident from my years of dragging deer out of the woods that the belly of the trailer would slide over it easily since there are no axles or hardware underneath.

"Grip it & Rip it" strategy!
Proof that sometimes that IS the best strategy.
Glad you are OK!
That exact scenario is one reason I try hard to be off the road before dark, oncoming lights completely blind me, a deer this time, a ladder, mattress ,tire, hog, etc. etc. next time.
Good job keeping the bike upright, a success story.

Yeah, this is what I always heard and did on dirt bikes. This was the first "opportunity" to use it on the street. I'm done. Don't need to test that theory ever again!

In MN the wild animals supposedly jointly belong to the "people" but the state decides how, when and the amount of them we can individually possess (or "harvest"). Approx 170,000 deer were harvested in MN 2024 season.
Deer populations up north vary mostly due to winter length\cold\snow depth and predators (wolf). The past couple of winters have been very mild so populations have rebounded from the severe winter of 2022. Insurance company estimates about 35,000 MN deer\vehicle collisions a year, most of which are unreported.

Glad you're okay. Last year I got a road gator at 230 AM on a rainy road while passing a semi. Got some damage to bike and trailer. And like @Swampdonkey I've got them in my yard also...

They hide out on my place because we don't hunt them here and they know it. My chihuahua (rest his soul) used to play with the fawns in the front yard.
