If that isn't a 'mute' function, what would you call it?
It actually turn the audio ON & OFF. Unlike the Mute button, when you turn the Audio Off, pressing the Vol button one time has no effect.

My apologies. I misread and misunderstood your comment.

I'm with you 100-percent. Let's move on, shall we? I'll divert everyone's attention by posting a new query: What's the consensus on the best way to peel a banana? (Eagerly awaiting 50 plus posts of hot debate.). :)

FWIW, with the audio 'quieted' by the console button, run the volume up to near max, and you will hear that the audio is not off.

Yes, if muted with the mite/source button, the volume lever cancels the 'mute'.
But both are mute functions.
