Dealer and manual say to check it by putting bike on unscrew dipstick ans wipe it off, then to place dipstike back in bike only do not screw in.

That bit about a LEVEL surface is the most important factor in getting unreliable readings.

Next week's "Question of the Week" will be
Do you fasten your helmet before mounting your bike, or After??
Always before. Never know when, as you get on the bike, you may fall down. Oh, wait - thats for Harleys at the local biker bar. Never mind......

Huh....and I was thinkin that it was for guys that can't hold up a two wheeler anymore!
Well, now that it is a trike, and no sidestand, when we check the oil we let all the air out of the left rear tire to get the correct lean.......thats why we don't bother to check it. Too hard to get the same air back into the tire......

HD would have introduced a recalibrated dipstick, to account for the reduction in parked lean angle.

Of course, it would cost $59.99, and would require a dealer to install.

And what is worse? Throw some chrome on it, and there would be guys buy the damned thing!!

I look under my trike...No spots, no oil loss..must be good to run...

My center stand is missing for some reason...hmmmmmm :doorag:

I wrote on my engine with a sharpie. Hey, it's under the cover all the time...

Neither, do not fasten it at all, might get a bee in it and have to get that thing off fast. :joke:

Ahhhhhhhhh, what's a center stand?

Edit: Please excuse me. I did not see until now that you were a charter member of the GWRRA North 'Bama Road Riders...and a triker...

You're excused as I just asked this question to see what kind of crazy answers I would get. I wasn't disappointed either! Thanks everyone I enjoyed reading the responses! Just trying to lighten the day.
Oh and BTW I'm a member of AL Chapter "I" of the GWRRA organization and it's the North Alabama Road Riders. Plus I do ride a trike and 2 wheeler too. :joke::joke:

Invert the bike and drain the oil, accurately measure to see if any oil has been consumed(to the nearest 0.5 oz.). Use a new crush washer, and clean the dip stick thoroughly using an approved degreaser.
Then pour the oil back in, being sure to replace any consumed oil, ounce for ounce. Records must:joke: be kept in triplicate!

Did anyone ever figure out why the newer bikes center stand tilts the bike over to the right? Does this have something to do with checking the oil?

Nope. Just keeps things a little outa kilter.....

Maybe its to fool us into thinking we overfill? Or have to lean down further to get to the stick? Or drain out the excess?....

Not a stupid question.

I'm always amazed at the stupid questions asked which are answered in the manual
I had the same question, because when I followed the directions in the manual it read low. When I screwed it in it read fine.

Called local Honda and was told to screw it in. When I rudely informed him that was not what the directions said, I was told they would look into it.

I have not received a call back from them.

Make sure the engine is up to temp before checking the oil regardless of what the book says. I just started mine and moved it a few feet then shut it off and put it on the center stand. After well over an hour it still checked a quart low. Not being a genius but not real stupid I rode it for a short while got the temp up then checked it and it was right on the full mark. Guess when it pumps up in the engine and it's not hot it takes a LONGGGGGGGGGGG time to get back to the bottom but then that can't be all bad.
