Just for the halibut I've been practicing rapid stops from 50 mph ( 53 speedo) dry level blacktop. Do it in 75 feet, one up. Anybody ever measure the distance or am I the only one here with too much time on their hands?

My 02 has ABS and after reading some other brake messages over the past year or so I have come to the conclusion that I am lucky to be able to stop at all with ABS!!!! There are many guys here that clain they can stop their non ABS bikes in less space than a bike with ABS. So if it took you 75 feet to stop an ABS bike at 53 mph the non ABS bikes can probley stop in 25 feet because non ABS is so much better. The extra money spent on ABS is wasted money from what I have read.

A very experienced rider may be able to stop a non-ABS unit is a shorter distance than an ABS model. But that would only be true on a dry, smooth rode surface. In the real world, we ride in the rain, discover sand and gravel on the road surface, or worse! No ABS? You are in trouble if you must stop in a hurry in most real world situations.

Give me ABS.

during the ERC I stopped in 11 feet from 20-25 mph... (not totally sure cause my speedo is in kph)

They almost made me do it again...

Pap,Nikey Hayden can stop a non ABS Wing faster than an ABS bike on dry pavement. There are darn few people on this board that can even come close to him on a good day.The last time I checked the roads we drive on have a lots of variables, sand ,oil ,water, leaves,You get the
idea.I bet I can stop a ABS bike under bad conditions i/e nomal conditions
better than most can with a non ABS,and not fall down ,thats how it is in the real world

Didn't you guys hear the news? ABS is bunk. In 2008 the federal government will ban ABS on all vehicles. In 2009 they plan on banning airbags.
Banning seat belts by 2010 and bringing back metal dashboards!!!!

In the ERC, I have been able to stop shorter than standard at 25 mph without ABS. As to real world, a quick stop is only one of the skills, and if you are always stopping quick, perhaps you are having too many close calls.

I've had occasions to stop but not really quickly, as I had a visual lead to see the hazard. I have had the situation where the ball rolled out on the street and was able to stop quickly with control.

Point is - all your skills need to be engaged. Many times having the right visual information gives you the time to slow down and avoid the need for a quick stop.

But, serious mode off, I enjoyed all the ABS jokes!

Kudos to you, sir, for taking the time to practice and experience something that could save your bacon some day.

Repetition of anything makes you better at it..

John, I agree 100% except for the statement that you stopped quicker with non-ABS.. An ERC is hardly a scientific controlled environment... There is reaction time and approach speed, both of which are not sufficiently measurable in that environment without cameras and other devices..

Perhaps a expert rider in perfect conditions can stop SLIGHTLY quicker on a non-ABS bike, but that's not a realistic expectation for us mere mortals (although I'm sure there's "experts" here that would challange that) ..

Bottom line is that ABS is ALWAYS a good idea if it's avail, after throwing my Wife's bike around on the range, I wish I had spent the extra $1k to have it on mine... It can be a lifesaver but is not a substitute for good defensive riding.
Ride safe!
