I have never had a problem getting a room without advance reservations but I ride solo so I may be less picky (still has to be clean) than if I rode with a wife/girlfriend, etc. School & summer vacation should be over by Labor Day so their should be less congestion wherever you go. Unless you are planning to visit someplace where a big event is going to take place I really don't think you'll have a problem. Easy for me to say, huh! The one reason I don't like to make reservations ahead of time is that I'm committed to being in a certain place at a certain time while I may want to ride for another hr. or so and it may be too late to cancel the room. I will admit that once or twice I have had to ride to the next town (30-40 mi.) to get a room.

I'm with you. I love the freedom of pulling into a place for dinner then looking at a hotel app on my I-phone then booking it while waiting for the food. Afterword, I just push the "take me there feature" and pop it in my phone holder and down the road to a comfy bed I go! It has never failed me yet but I have had to ride on to the next town a time or two.

I have never had any problems in the past on the coast finding either motels or campgrounds in September, however, last September we had trouble finding campgrounds with the RV on the Oregon coast. Not sure why,but it was a surprise.

You probably be ok,but wouldn't hurt to have the ability to stop and call ahead when you know where you are going to be.

Speaking of Bodega Bay,we stopped at a nice hotel there once in September several years ago without reservations.(can't remember the name)
They quoted me a price of 189 bucks for a room.
Apparently the look on my face said that was too much, they dropped the price to 110,and it was a very nice room with a view of the Bay,a fireplace and a complimentary bottle of wine.
