I have been planning another trip to the East coast all summer and one of the things I wanted to do was to ride HWY 12 South from Kitty Hawk and take the ferry to Cedar Island. Now that Irene has dropped by and rinsed away part of my road I have a question for those of you that have seen the damage and may know how NC DOT works. Any guesses on whether or not the road will be repaired (or at least a Goldwing path open) by the week of OCT 10th?

Business owners welcome return of visitors to Hatteras Island

HATTERAS, N.C. — More than two weeks after Hurricane Irene swept up the Outer Banks, visitors returned to Hatteras Island Thursday.

Irene's impact in Hatteras

Irene washed out parts of N.C. Highway 12, the only road to the island, leaving residents dependent on the ferry system to reach their homes. While they cleaned up, authorities kept visitors off the island.

On Thursday, visitors lined up for ferry service to the island's southern villages of Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. The rest of the island won't be open to visitors until sometime after Sept. 29.
