Ignorance on Spoiler use

Ok, I'm fairly new here but love this board. You guys have helped me decide on a new windshield for my 2002 wing (Titanium) already. I ordered the F4 (+4) windshield yesterday from Direct Line. I also ordered the Baker hand wings for under the mirrors.

Now I've got a question I've wondered about since buying my Wing last fall...What the heck is the purpose of the spoiler that everyone seems to put on the trunk lid? I'm getting ready to buy a luggage rack which I think would be a good addition for our cross country trips (wife and me) but I'm stumped at the real need to add a spoiler.

Go ahead and laugh, then tell me the answer!

Thanks!

By the way, I had a 1995 Kawasaki Voyager XII for 3 years before getting the 2002 wing. Wow, what a difference. My wife and I love everything about the wing.

Hey Wayne. I use the spoiler to keep the rear of the bike from floating at speeds in excess of 150 mph. :22yikes::22yikes:

Actually I have one primarily because it adds one more brake (or running light) to the rear. It serves as a "high brake" light like is in the rear window of a cage.

Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of the 1800
Besides looking nice the spoiler makes it easier to be seen, much like the raised brake light on a cage. (Before you add a luggage rack, read the post about the broken trunk lid.) I think that the spoiler is one of the most popular additions to the wing and brings along alittle more rear lighting
Extra lights and brake lights to be seen better from the rear. Plus it looks kewl.
Wayne,
It makes you more visible, the xtra light with a flasher ( optional ) makes you stand out.

I have one simply because I like the looks of it and especially the extra brake light. I would like to convert it to the brake light/signal light, but I do NOT want it to function as a running light. I think the spoiler lighting up at night is a real attention getter for the vehicle following you. Kruz ez, Dave

Wayne,

The spoiler is just another cosmetic farkle. The addition of the running/brake light in the spoiler is a real safety measure. The better your Wing can be seen will help keep you safe.

I don,t have the spoiler on my bike, but I have added an led running/brake light under the luggage rack for far less expense than the spoiler. All of this is just MHO.

Be safe and enjoy!

:agree:
It looks cool and adds an extra brake light.
Safety, safety, safety.....more lights the better....add a back off device and make it even better....and it looks great...

I think it should be standard.....
Hi Wayne and welcome to the Board. Like Rickster said:

..."I have one primarily because it adds one more brake (or running light) to the rear. It serves as a "high brake" light like is in the rear window of a cage."

In addition, Electrical Connection makes a plug and play harness that causes the spoiler brake light to flash, which makes it STAND out when the brake is engaged.

Think of it as making the bike look a bit more attractive and adds a bit of additional safety. :yes1: :doorag:

I would not have the spoiler on my bike. I prefer the clean lines without it.

With that said it is not just cosmetic, it does add a third light and the more lights the more visable you are.

Now the luggage rack is worthless. Holds 10 lbs maximum, looks like crap and has caused many trunk lids to crack . Do a search
IMHO I think the bike looks unfinished without the rear spoiler. The safety factor is a plus also.;)
I agree with the others about the safety aspect of the spoiler lights.

But the reason I have one on my Wing is because I think the bike looks unfinished without it.
It's a safety farkle.....
The spoiler looks great in my opinion. You can also add the modulator to the spoiler light for an added safety feature. The safety feature tactic seems to work with the wife most of the time!;)

Hey MikeJay. Any chance of seeing a pix of your added light to the rear rack?
I had the dealer install the Honda luggage rack before I knew that I would not be able to add the spoiler with the rack. I can't afford a new lid and spoiler, and also, I don't want to give up the rack.

OK, I am curious. What kind of light did you install and how is it attached? Any pictures?
Well, actually the spoiler balances the bike.

It make the back heavier by making your wallet $200 lighter.
