Miscellaneous Maintenance Notes August 21, 2022, 1121 hours

*Front Tire Change 411
  • The longer wheel spacer goes on the left side. The short wheel spacer goes on the right side. **If you install incorrectly the ring sensor will likely be DAMAGED!
  • The whole lot (pinch bolts & axel bolt) should be loosened and then re-torqued in the correct sequence.
  • Tighten the Axel bolt first (44 ft. lbs.), then the left pinch bolts (16 ft. lbs.), then HOLD BRAKE and PUMP the forks Up & Down to (seat) the axel, then finally tighten the (Right pinch bolts (16 ft. lbs.).
  • The gap between the sensor and ring should be 1mm (0.040 inches). Check that there are no deposits or metal filings on the tip of the sensor!
  • **Don't torque the pinch bolts all at one time! **Every time you tighten one of the pinch bolts it lessens the force of the other one too some degree. ***Proper procedure is going back and forth until they are both torqued out correctly!
SOFT BRAKE PEDAL CSC ENCORE FIX
***Popa Zook trike builder 411 on CSC Brake Bleeding procedure for the soft brake pedal.

With this procedure, which CSC researched and developed to solve the soft brake issue, you do not remove the brake lines, bleed the brakes before or after the procedure, or do anything that causes any loss of brake fluid.

You are simply removing the brake pads, pumping the rear brake pedal until the pistons are fully extended against the rotors, then compressing the 4 brake caliper pistons until they are fully 100% retracted, then reinstalling the pads.

I have done this on two Goldwing DCT Encore trikes I built, and it cured the soft brakes on both. The pistons will resist being fully retracted and make you think they will not seat, but they will. I used a large flat-blade screwdriver to pry them into a fully retracted position.

***Yes, this fix does work for the issue described by CSC, and that is the grease issue.

***One thing to note is that the ABS brake system on these new '18 & newer Honda Goldwing, is that this brake system is designed to utilize BOTH the front and rear brakes working in unison at the same time, so do not expect to get optimal braking when using just the rear brakes or front brakes alone, because you will not get sufficient braking when using just the rear or front brakes alone without the OTHER!

You MUST use both the front and rear brakes simultaneously for aggressive brake efficiency!

Brake Maintenance procedure for 2018 & up GW DCT-TOUR

GL1833 Front Brake Pad Replacement

1. Prep area to protect the paint from brake fluid spill by using a plastic bag around each of the Brake Reservoirs. Also, an absorbent rag wrapped around the brake reservoirs should seriously be considered! Be careful not to accidentally press the brake pedal or brake handle during this procedure.
2. Unscrew the brake reservoirs covers & remove the (Hand Brake & Brake Pedal Reservoirs) and drain the brake fluid-as you compress the brake pads pushing the cylinders pucks fluid will be pushed back into the reservoirs-thus you are avoiding a spill!
3. Add a small amount of DOT4 brake fluid & replace the covers after draining the brake fluid from them.
4. Remove the (2) Caliper Mounting bolts. (14mm) *these bolts are hollow through & through, pages 19-12 in Service Manual Honda suggests replacing these bolts with NEW ones ☹ Use High Temp Thread Sealer on threads
5. Remove the ABS sensor wire from the clip (left side).
6. Remove the Brake caliper rocking motion until it is free.
7. CLEAN the Pistons on the Caliper so the grime is not pushed back into the calipers! Brake Cleaner or Denatured Alcohol and a Toothbrush work well for this procedure! Wear GLOVES & Eye protection! Rotate the Caliper over to clean the Backside.
8. Use Compressed Air and blow the cleaned pistons of any debris.
9. Time to compress the Brake Pads & Cylinders back into the Calipers; if you will not be reusing the Pads you can use a Screwdriver but note this will ruin the pads-so don’t use the screwdriver if you plan on reusing the same Brake Pads! If you reuse them use a Brake Pad tool to compress the Brake pads back.
10. Get all (6) pistons pushed back flush with the caliper.
a. Next, pry the Brake pad out the top portion of the Caliper until you observe the “Ear” of the BP=Brake Pad pop out the top then the bottom pad.
b. Remove both BP as described (a)
c. Make sure the “Spring Clip” is seated properly as it holds the BP in place within the Caliper.
d. Now would be a suitable time to clean the area around the Spring Clip!
e. Note there are no sliders to be greased/lubed on the GL1833!
f. The new Pads are about 8.85 mm in diameter in thickness.
g. The “Inboard BP” tends to have more wear on it, it may not wear evenly due to the “Linked Brake System”
h. **Make sure the “Arrow” on the BP faces UP when installing!
i. Install the top “Ear” first holding it in place install the bottom “Ear” next.
j. Reposition the Caliper over the Rotor, make sure the BP is centered over the Rotors and the Calipers fit properly over the Bosses.
k. Replace the Caliper Bolts, make sure the Caliper is properly seated, and torque bolts to 31 ft-lbs.
l. Install the ABS sensor wire (left side) back into the clip (step 5).
Repeat
the steps above for the “Right Side Caliper”
• Drain the old Brake Fluid and refill with New Dot4 Brake Fluid (you are doing a brake flush with this method!
Pump the Front Brake handle & Brake Pedal until firm!
Before you put the Lids onto the Brake Reservoirs clean them up and look for any signs of damage or debris that needs to be cleaned away.
Clean and dry any signs of moisture away from the white plastic & black rubber pieces.
Reassemble the seal and replace onto the Brake reservoir and don’t over tighten the screws on both reservoirs!

YOUR BRAKE JOB IS NOW COMPLETE! PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK!
YOU CAN NOW COMPLETE THE BRAKE FLUSH BY MEANS OF THE BRAKE BLEEDER VALVES FLUSH SYSTEM COMPLETELY WITH NEW FLUID-AS YOU ONLY REMOVED ABOUT 80% OF THE OLD FLUID WITH THE PROCEDURE YOU JUST COMPLETED!
**See Video #24 Brake Pad Change & Bleed if needed to refresh your memory

December 27th, 2022
Installed F4 16" Tinted windshield purchased used from "Mark," who resides in Newberry, Florida, on 24th December and picked up at his residence. A great deal: it did not even appear used at all. I will take it out on the 28th of December for a trial run when going for Lab work in Tarpon Springs.

I am interested to find out how well it protects from the frigid air (Florida Standards), as temperatures are in the low to mid-fifties. I will update with my findings. This windshield was purposed as a warm-hot weather comfort for the summer months. It is advertised as "scratch" resistant. It is also advertised as shedding water swiftly. Also, you can use paper towels to clean the shield without scratching the treated polycarbonate shield. Installation took less than five minutes.

December 28th, 2022
Well, I took a ride with the F4 16" Tinted windshield. I mounted the trike, and when attempting to adjust the shield to the upward position, I thought the mechanism to raise & lower the shield was broken. Pressed to raise the shield upward, and it rose about one-fourth inch. What! I then pressed the lower shield, and it would go downward. HHHMMMM thinking to myself, I said, "what could be causing this? I did not touch any electrical components." Suddenly it occurred to me the 16" shield was already at its highest raised level. Remember, I went from the OEM windshield 20" to the F4 16" shield. There was nothing wrong with the raise and lower mechanism, and it was the idiot trying to raise the shield that was already in its highest position DUH.

The road test of the shield in the lowest position gave me ample room to see above the top. Guessing some 6-8 inches. It allowed air onto my face, shoulders, and chest but did not blast me at 40-45 mph. The shield raising incrementally adjusted the airflow higher on my chest, neck, and face. I finally raised the shield to the highest position and was in an envelope with minimal air to my chest, neck, and face. I raised my hand above the shield and noticed it was 4-6 inches above it before I felt the air deflecting off my raised hand. I was truly thrilled with the air management in the cool, but by Florida standards, "Coldish."

I will not be switching the Honda OEM shield in the winter months as that was my thinking and using the shorter 16" shield for the summer months only. But with such effective air Management, I will use the F4 16" year around! It will be nice to lower the shield in the sweltering summer months and get some airflow onto my chest, neck, and face.

Additional information on the ride; I was wearing my modular Shoei Netec II and did not experience any buffeting at speeds up to fifty mph. **(I will update when I can safely do a higher speed outside populated areas with low-speed limits.)

I ordered some F4 windshield cleaner via Wing Stuff. I used alcohol to clean the windshield and a paper shop towel and no signs of scratching whatsoever. It passes the "scratch-resistant" comments by F4. Time will tell. So far, so GOOD!

January 4th, 2023, the Wing Stuff order with the F4 Windshield cleaner was delivered, and I applied the product. I must say the F4 windshield cleaner works as advertised! I will place one bottle of the cleaner in the trunk for cleaning when on the road.(y)

February 9th, 2023, installed the Kurry Top lid trunk organizer-simple install. I should be able to tidy up my trunk space for efficiency! I like it so far, I just must pull the fold-down accessories bag inward to allow closing the top lid so it's not pinched.

February 2023
The fuel of choice is now Tier 1 fuel for keeping the valves & engine cleaner of sludge deposits.

**March 7th, 2023,
well, after using three tanks filled with Tier 1 fuel, I noticed the (mpg drop 38mpg-40mpg Regular grade) my average prior was 42mpg up to 44mpg. I went back to Sam’s club fuel Regular grade the mpg improved again back to the previously mentioned mpg. Not able to figure this out just yet, I will do some research to try and understand why the drop in mpg with a Tier 1 fuel would cause an mpg decrease. The GW always ran great on Sam’s Club regular-grade fuel. (Update to follow). The Air Filter was changed less than a year ago so that should not be an issue with <mpg. The fuel oxygen sensor has no history of problematic failures on the Honda GWs.

In preparation for changing the front tire from the OEM Bridgestone to the AVON COBRA CHROME TRIKE TIRE 130/70R18-63V Tubeless, I discovered the Right Front Inside brake pad was about gone (the left top two pads were almost worn through the wear indicator lines! • Delivery Date: 3-7-2023 by 7 P.M.

  1. I will have Cycle Springs Palm Harbor R/R the OEM Bridgestone front tire and replace it with the Cobra Chrome Trike Tire once I have installed the "Centramatc" balancer. **Advise Cycle Spring not to balance the front tire when they R/R with the New Cobra Chrome Trike tire as the "Centramatics" will balance the tire.
  2. R/R the worn right front (Interior) brake pads only as the other brake pads on the Left & Right brake calipers look to have minimal wear. **If I can locate my (old brake pads) that I replaced prior brake pad change, I will use them to replenish the brake pads as needed. The Honda GW's 2018 & up have brake pad issues (right front interior pads) wearing faster than the other brake pads on the right & left side.(n)
  3. Reinstall the Front Tire-Wheel & Test Ride.
  4. Brake Fluid change? (Update to note if it was done).
March 7th, 2023
The "Centramatics" was delivered and installed as I had taken the front tire off and did the following in preparation.
  1. Since I was still waiting for the Partszilla Honda OEM Brake pads to arrive, I R-R the current pads and cleaned the Brake Calipers and Pistons prior to depressing them back into the Calipers. It occurred to me that I had (2 pairs) of "Niche" brake pads that I did not use on my last R-R Brake pads. So instead of waiting for the Honda OEM brake pads to be delivered, I installed them. As I have the "Route 66" trip planned later in the year (I will pack the Honda OEM brake pads for R-R during that trip).
  2. So, all I need to do now is call Cycle Springs for an appointment to have the Avon Cobra Chrome Trike tire mounted.
  3. Then I will mount the New Avon Tike tire and button everything back up!
At this point, my next maintenance will be. March 9th, 2023
  • **Oil-oil filters DCT/Motor; (next service 40,630 @ 4k or 44,630 @ 8k)
  • the CSC rear drive oil R-R [**March 9th, 2023, completed! next service CSC rear drive @ 56,630 miles
  • UPDATE 3/23/2023 Inspected the "Parking Brake Pads" & replaced them with "Niche parking brake pads". Ordered "OEM Hona parking brake pads" for the next service replacement from Partzilla! Almost fifty dollars for the two parking brake pads!!! The OEM Honda pads were worn low perfect time to replace them!
  • R-R the Oil, Filters; motor & DCT, GN4 10w30. [*Completed]
  • Check Fluids, exterior & undercarriage inspections, lighting, Coolant reservoir, Brake reservoirs, hoses, etc. [*Completed]
  • Wash & Paint conditioning, RDL Leather treatments.
Roll A Home; prep for the long-distance trip (Rte.66 Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA.) and get the portable battery generator location and set up, tires, electric brakes set up, and checklist for the adventure camping. I have not decided on a 12v AGM battery since I purchased the Battery Power station. I will rent an RV lot that has power & water when I need to repower/charge up items should I not get a good charge with the Solar Panel. **Check & grease the wheel bearings.

March 8th, 2023, mileage: 36,627
I made an appointment with Cycle Springs-Clearwater with Zack Keller for the R/R of the Bridgestone Exedra front tire & replaced it with the Avon Cobra Chrome. I requested that the wheel not balance the wheel/tire as I installed the "Centramatic" wheel balancer. Also requested they remove the balance weights from the rim during service. Was advised the cost is $37.00, but it was $27.00 out the door ;)

I installed the Niche brake pads (front set) after removing and cleaning the calipers and current brake pads, as I did not desire to wait on the OEM Honda OEM brake pads from Partszilla. I will pack them when I make the RTE-66 planned road trip later in the year for R/R on the trip. Buttoned everything back up.

July 14th, 2023 I purchased a 2017 GL1832 Audio comfort-ABS-Navi Pearl White with only 13,864 miles! The previous could not locate his records for GW service but claims to have kept service current.

I will have the Extended warranty carry over with this GW purchase for approximately 2 years. *Will need to address some "streaks" in the Navigation screen which after reviewing many comments concerning the Navigation scree issue Honda Warranty will cover such observed issue with my Navigation screen.

Maintenance completed today July 24th, 2023.
1. Oil/Filter R&R-oil was very dark; I feel much better knowing the "White Pearl" has fresh oil & filter! Next change due: 25,926 for 6 miles on current oil as Honda recommends Oil/Filter change every 8,000 miles; I'm not comfortable going till 8 thousands miles for my WP aka White Pearl! I added 12 ounces to the coolant reservoir as it was lower than it should be normally * will also keep an inspection of the reservoir level to make sure no leaks in the cooling system. I will R&R the coolant fluids in the winter.

Will be performing a (2) Brake job consisting of; installation of (3) Speed Bleeders; (4) new brake pads front and rear, brake flush as observed brake fluid was dark amber color upon inspection, this will include the Anti-dive valve; (5) R/R Front Bridgestone Exedra 130/70R/18-63 H G709 & Rear Bridgestone Exedra 180/60R/R16 80H or may go with the Avon Cobra tires; I estimate I could get another thousand or two current tires if I am gentle with the braking & throttle; (6) Rear Drive service R/R with Pro Honda drive shaft oil!
All the above have been completed as of January 5th, 2024!
COSMETICS:
(1) Will do a nice wash and wax with clay bar treatment and a wipe on Ceramic coating as well. Completed! Ongoing.
(2) Dress the Rims and Tires. Done-Ongoing.
(3)
ELECTRONICS-ACCSESORRIES:
(1) Electrical Connect Bluetooth device (already purchased). Installed!
(2) EC Ground Loop Isolator (purchased not used as I had no interference-will sell item).
(3) Evaluate previous owners LED lighting and either keep of trash. TBD-Will Keep them!
(4) Add additional accessories electronics-black/chrome etc.
(5) ReEvaluate the Kurry driver & passenger pegs. Trash or keep? Keep-save some $$$$
(6) CB-Radio & Antenna? Will not purchase with more technology at hand.
(7) Ram mounts reassessments for mounting for iPhone-GPS if I need additional besides the GW Navi unit-TBD/To Be Determined. ***Purchased the Carpuride W502 installed and it works great it mirrors the iPhone Carplay and works really great!

I maybe adding another Satellite Emergency device unless I use the Spot that I cancelled service on as I was not doing any long distance traveling. I may sell it for updated model before my Route 66 Adventure later in 2024 provided my health maintains me. Planning of the Route is already formatted GPS on Desktop with "MyRoutes GPS Mapping." Will update in the near future!
