OK; I'm stupid because I don't know what this means in the last section of tire sizes (assume 16 to be inner diameter of tire), but what do the following optional letters mean:

/16
/zr16
/r16
/tr16
/hr16
/16rf
/vr16

I'm lazy because I chose to ask the question here, rather than spending the time (and searches) to find out the answer:roll:

The letters are for the speed ratings.

Also these numbers are for sustained speed. I would not hesitate to get a tire with say around 100 mph speed rating ( remember, this would be for a car ) and run it up to a buck twenty now and then. But that's just me. I am not recommending it.

Just now went and clicked on the Subaru link that CBX man put in his reply and it does say maximum speed. I had always heard that the speed rating was for sustained speed.

Yep, speed ratings are for sustained speed. Put a V rated tire at 150 and you should be able to run it at that speed until it gone. I always thought a V rating was 160, but this speed and weight chart I found says 150, either way, V is more than I need.

Speed Ratings

Speed ratings are certified maximum sustained speed designations assigned to passenger car radials and high performance tires. In the U.S., these ratings are based on tire testing in laboratory conditions under simulated loads. For a tire to be speed rated by the U.S. Government, it must meet certain minimum government standards for reaching and sustaining that specified speed. Domestically, high performance tires must be speed rated. The tire industry defines high performance tires as those with speed symbols of "S" or greater and aspect ratios of 70 or lower. Conventional passenger car radials need only meet the minimum Department of Transportation standard of 85 mph. Speed symbols may currently be marked on a tire in any of three ways: 205/60ZR15; 205/60ZR15 89W; or 205/60R15 89W. Any speed symbol denoting a fixed maximum speed capability will be at the end of the service description following the tire marking (illustrated in the second and third examples above).
Generally, it is recommended that a speed-rated tire be replaced with a tire having an equivalent or greater speed rating. However, if you never drive at speeds near the limits of your speed rated tires, you may choose to replace them with tires having a lesser top speed rating. Speed ratings do not indicate how well a tire handles or corners. They certify the tire’s ability to withstand high speed.
The speed-rating system in use today was developed in Europe to categorize tires developed for specific vehicle speed requirements.
