I switched to Geico Insurance in October of 2007 after finding out that Progressive rates their insured’s’ based on their credit reports. I just received my renewal documents for the new policy year and see that my premium increased almost 30%. I wouldn’t think that the difference between an 08 Ultra Classic and an 09 Goldwing would be that significant and so I called.

They are surcharging the collision portion of the Goldwing due to a speeding ticket I received in my cage in September of 2007.
Whoaa, hold the phone here.

First, the speeding ticket was in a cage not on a motorcycle. Doesn’t matter a speeder is a speeder.

Second, the speeding ticket occurred BEFORE I was insured with GEICO! Doesn’t matter a speeder is a speeder.
But the good news is that it will “come off” my policy next year with the celebration of the speeding tickets third year.
SO, a speeder is a speeder until the third year, and then you are no longer capable of it?

Yes.

Also - all the insurance companies base their rates on your credit report in combination with your driving history, employment and residential history, distance to work, and what zip code you live in/near.

Use of your driving record to assess insurance cost is common. Their logic is, if you speed (substitute any violation/accident here) with one vehicle you would speed with all. Keep your record clean for 3+ years rates normally go down. Any accident considered your fault, even if not cited for, can be used in the determination of insurance cost. Yes it sucks, but think of the insurance industry as a casino, the house makes the rules and will always come out ahead (overall).

Geico is one of the last that does not use the credit report. That is why I switched from Progressive to them in the first place.

:agree:

And in my experience, Progressive is much fairer than the scam artists at Geico!
And what would your experience be? You had a bad experience with Geico? Bad claim or just a bad quote???

What difference does the METHOD of deciding the rate make? The bottom line is how much you pay in premiums and the service. I get a very reasonable rate from Progressive with just average credit, and they have treated me MUCH better than the lizzard.

Maybe what he's saying without saying it is that his credit isn't so hot...I know it would concern me if my rate went up because my score wasn't just right because some credit institution thinks I'm too spread out...my score isn't too bad though, so progressive plays into my favor.

It is hard to do anythigng without it being based on a credit report somewhere along the line anymore. Yes, at least in Texas, a speeder is a speeder. If you get a ticket on a tricycle it follows you for 3 years. If you get it in a school zone I think it haunts you either 5 or 7 years. Construction zone, I haven't heard but it will be all they can get for sure.

MC Ins

It is a proven stat that credit rating affect your insurance cost. The state of texas tried to prove the ins companies were wrong and it blew up in there face. After spending over 1 million $ of our tax money on a program with UT, the final report basically, "there is a realtionship in predicting loss ratio that go along with credits scores". So practically every auto carrier does scoring now.

insurance

I have State Farm and have been extremely pleased with them. I know I pay a few bucks more than I could get insurance for some where else but it is real nice to talk to an agent that knows you and your situation when the need arises. In the few occasions I have had to turn to the insurance company I know all I have to do is call my agent and tell her the situation and she handles everything from there. They were very fair with me on the wing that just got totaled (got hit head on by a car). It was an 04 with 98K on it and they paid off 13700 on it. My agent has called me more than onece since the accident just to see if I need anything and to make sure that all was going well. Since this is a legal matter now, the attorneys wanted to make sure nothing happened to the bike until this is all settled so State Farm had the bike towed to their storage facilty at no additional charge to me and they will store it until the case is settled, again at no additional cost to me. To me, the personal service is worth a few extra bucks. I don't know if they use a credit report or not but considering my credit score is in the toilet and my rates have not changed, I would guess not. Just my two cents worth, Frank

I have Geico for my cages. Use to be StateFarm for about close to 30 years. On the 'Wing, I have my insurance through Pacific Specialty.

Anyways, regardless, you need to shop around from time to time. Insurance rates can vary drastically from state to state, even city to city. I know this from experience as I am sure, so do many of you.

Personally I have Foremost through Harley Davidson Insurance and have found it very reasonable in cost and great to deal with.
When I originally went with them in 2002 I had a fairly significant accident not long after that did about $9k in bike damage as well as $5k to the car I hit (my fault). I fully expected to be cancelled on the spot but they did not and they also did not raise my premiums. have never considered changing since then.

What in the he!! does your credit score have to do with your Driving ability?
I suppose if you have no credit, you cannot buy any gas. No gas, no riding around on your motorycle. :joke:

They started that nonsense a few years ago. Just another way to run the rates up.

Insurance companies do things for no reason at times, we had our home and auto insurance with State Farm for years, this past year they jumped the premiums up ......way up there. Our home went from 700 a year to 1680 and my bike went from around 400 a year up to 900 a year.

We moved to allstate and the home insurance is 500 a year and my bike insurance is 326 dollars a year.

I think that was all due to credit as I have none, I buy things cash, except for my one credit card I use for gas. I had no credit, so up they went.

A person with a subpar credit score is 53 percent more likely to file an insurance claim than someone with a higher credit score. After studying millions of credit reports and millions of insurance claims that is what the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Texas researchers discovered.

All insurance companies including GIECO use credit reports in evaluating risks. Anyone who claims different is misinformed. From the Geico website:

We may receive Information about you from consumer reporting agencies, which provide us with motor vehicle reports, claim reports, and/or credit information where permitted by law. When you ask for a rate quotation, we may obtain credit information if permitted by applicable state law.

Who are we trying to kid, we buy a 118 horsepower wing to ride 55 miles an hour???

of course we all speed

What really frogs my butt, is when they rate you on others living in the household, even though those folks are not allowed, or licensed to ride the bike

thats just not fair, in my opinion

But insurance and fair are never used in the same paragraph, are they ??

You bet, shop and shop some more

It makes no sense as to the rates

Two people who live next door, have all the same answers to credit, miles driven and all that, can have a drastic rate variation, from the same company

I've been round and round the insurance thing and lately Allstate has been the best deal for my family. Where you live has a lot to do with it and Alstate Florida has been pushing MC, Boat and RV insurance here for the last 2 years for spread their risk out because of the exposure in homeowners insurance.

I would go on the Allstate site and go through their system to hook you up with a local agent who specializes in MC insurance.

Another avenue is this site: http://www.bikersins.com/index.html They specialize in MC insurance and are brokers for all the major carriers and they are good people.

tried Progressive, Geico and Foremost
... all three were about 30% higher than Nationwide
(I think "Allied" is the underwriter for Nationwide/motorcycles)

... also, when I informed them that I recently traded my
Level I 2007 (basic premi audio)
for a "new" Level III 2008 (comfort, Nav and ABS)
they lowered my rate almost an additional 10%

... I asked "how come" and they said even though
the Level III is worth over $3k more in value,
the ABS "safety factor" lowered the rate overall
... and then, instead of a bill for the new bike ..
they sent me a refund check in the mail.
...
heck... who am I to argue ..
:)

in Florida, 100/300K liability plus full comp for one year
for about the same price as set of BridgeStone tires...
IMHO
... hard to beat for value.
