Was thinking of making the ride up from Maryland to the Motorcyclepedia museum in Newburgh, NY. What is the area like, (big city, rural town) ......trying to find backroads all the way there or as much as possible.

Not sure if you ever made the trip up to museum in Newburgh, NY, but I came upon you post and can tell you that the City of Newburgh (where museum is located), while small compared to many cities in NYS, would not be considered rural. The adjacent Town of Newburgh and other surrounding towns / villages are mostly more rural.

US 9W http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_9W beginning just North of GW Bridge in NJ, which somewhat hugs the Hudson River all the way up, will take you right into the City of Newburgh, though I think the most rural roads would be to approach from the West through Northeast NJ / PA into Orange County NY.

Regards,
