NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law

ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.
The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Prayers sent for him and his family. Thank God on this Independence Day he have the right to be free and ride his ride the way he wanted to. I choose to ride with my helmet on, he chose to ride without his. That is what America is all about.

My Helmet Rule:

"Don't ask me to take my helmet off, and I will not ask you to put yours on"!

(unless you are riding on my bike. Then it is helmets on).

That's what you get for protesting without the necessary gear. Protesting can be a dangerous business. New rule when protesting..., ATGATT... :doorag:

The "No Helmet Crowd" is already blaming it on the issues that arise from group riding, and not as a result of cranial-immovable object contact.

Personally, I think the wreck was a result of brake misapplication.

I have a friend that lives in Conn. where there's no helmet law and he had a friend recently die of head injuries on his Harley on I95 after getting run off the road by a tour bus going to Foxwoods casino. My friend told me he wishes Conn. would pass a helmet law so it would force him to wear one.:wrong:

Shouldn't need a law to force common sense on someone.
Michigan is trying to get rid of their helmet law.

Sadly the road is what caused the death. They are dangerous and should be made illegal, or at least out of memory foam.

Until that happens, I choose to wear a helmet all the time, even though it is not required in Illinois. A high school buddy of mine just went down after two loose dogs decided to take him out. He was wearing a full bucket and it saved his jaw and face from being screwed up big time. I think I may switch from the 3/4 I currently use. The proof is in his pictures. If you choose not to, that is OK by me, it's your skin in the game. Ride safe and my condolences to the family and friends of the killed rider in NY...
