I just installed a dashboard mount for my Garmin GPS and Escort Passport 8500 radar detector from Goldwing gadgets.com. I also have the Windbender Windshield with the electric option.

In the mounting instructions for the Escort Radar Detector, it says: "...Mount Passport away from windshield wipers, other solid objects and heavily tinted ares that might obstruct the radar antenna or laser lens."

I will be mounting it away from the Windbender windshield supports, but where the detector would rest on the dash mounted shelf, the lower Windbender windshield which is a heavily tinted piece of plastic, would be in it's line of sight. Will this have an adverse effect on the radar detector's ability to do it's job? Have any of you that have the Windbender, and radar detector mounted as I've described above, had any issues of the radar detector not functioning properly?

Can I mount it on the dash, behind the dark portion, or should I use a mount (like R-A-M) so it sits above the dark portion?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Mount it behind the dark plastic. Mine has been there since the windbenders came out with no effects whatso ever on detector performance. I have the suction cup clip mounted to the center of the dark shield. I used a star washer and SS bolt to mount it. Drill a small hole and mount the clip on the inside "with the suction cups" in place. Suction clips will buffer out any vibes between the clip and the dark shield. I mounted mine so detector sits right on top of dash. I also put 2 small "felt cushion pads" on the bottom of detector so that it sits nice and even on dash. Have had no problems with the mount at all and it allows me to move the 8500 to my PU when needed...

Thanks Top,

That helps, as I really want to mount it on the dash. I'd like to get it off my handlebar R-A-M mount, keeps it out of sight (to a more or less degree), and gives a cleaner look to the cockpit.

I appreciate the response.

When they mention heavily tinted areas they are refering to after-market film type tinting. Many of those use a thin layer of aluminum in thier construction. Especially those that create a mirror like silver color to the glass. Mounting behind the tinted dark plastic should not have much of an affect.

MC Boy,

That's kinda' what I was thinking. The tinting is a film added, whereas the Windbender lower is colored acrylic. Again, I wanted to submit this message to find what others thought/know regarding this. Thanks for your reply.
