Our discussion here may not go on much further, so I want to be sure to THANK YOU for your kind words, sympathy, encouragement, and advice. They really have made me feel better! Although we've never met in person (I think) our common interest allows you a better understanding of my situation than can be appreciated by non-riders.

As requested, I'll let you know the outcome... as I replied to Rudy2, I hope the insurance company doesn't total it, but I have no knowledge of the calculations that go into that decision. This Wing and I have been over a lot of road together, but it IS an inanimate object.

Thank you again... your kind words and advice are much appreciated. See you somewhere down the road!

Glad you are ok... from the looks of the bike you had someone watching out for you. This is the second incident I have read today on deer and Goldwing's. Both of the wings were blue. I'm thinking deer see them as a threat and are trying to take them out. Maybe they will total your bike and you can get a new color.
That’s why I’m selling my blue one! 🤣

This Blue Bike = Deer Target Theory must be suppressed!

Y'all got any idea how many members are waiting on a new Blue? or looking for a good used Blue?
Especially don't tell our esteemed members like @Brian_Fenner....

But this would be a great time for the Paint Scheme Pauper known as Mother Honda to renew the superb Titanium.... everyone knows Titanium is lighter.....yeah, that means faster....

I live in Wisconsin which is a haven for free roaming deer. I also worked for the state patrol and if any agency had multiple encounters with deer it was us. It got to the point that I began to hate deer because they had absolutely no common sense or fear of motor vehicles. At almost any time of the year they would appear in front of your vehicle, but the fall rut was the worst. Typically early morning just prior to sunup or late evening just after sundown was the most active active movement time for deer. Many years ago we did a study of deer whistles that were available at the time and we found none that worked. We did not have any powered deer alerts at the time. I would love to see a legitimate test of those electric whistles to see if they work, but I doubt they do much.

The best defense for avoiding deer is to slow down and watch the sides of the road you are on for movement of any sort. Keep your eyes moving unless you see something. Be extra careful/watchful in areas where deer crossing signs are posted. They don't install those signs for no good reason. Generally speaking once a deer takes to run you are not going to stop it or the others with it. You can try to blow your horn or whatever else you may have, but normally speaking they will NOT stop their run. Remember too that their traction is very limited on paved surfaces so even if they wanted to stop or change direction they can't do this very well. How many other animals will run straight into the side of your vehicle??

If you keep a sharp eye out for deer and remember there is always more than just one you are already ahead of the game. Watch how fast you are going and how close you are following another vehicle. Just because the sign says 70 MPH doesn't mean you have to go 70 at sunset or dawn. You can slow down a bit. And that car in front of you may hammer his brakes to avoid a deer and you certainly don't want to run into the back of him while you are watching the sides of the road you are on. Ride safe and ride smart, but until I see proof an electrically operated deer alert works it's nothing more than a gimmick to me.

I remember when we got our first Gold WIng in 2007. It was strange that (all of a sudden) we started having more deer encounters. Before that, we had always been riding some manner of Harley, and very rarely saw a deer, and even then it was at a fair distance and making tracks.

This is only one study on the subject matter. The majority of articles out there say they are ineffective or the results of the study are inconclusive.

This is an interesting unit; says the sound replicates a rattlesnake and can be heard up to a quarter mile away. I know from personal experience that the sound of a rattler makes me freeze in my tracks :) Now whether a deer can hear this thing or not is another question altogether.

An infamous former dictator of the German nation consistently told his security teams that the most effective tool for his personal safety was simply luck. Many attempts on his life bore out that fact. I'm guessing luck is the only reason I haven't yet had a deer strike. God knows I'm no better a planner or rider than those who have had one.

I'm late to the party, but reading through this I'm reminded of a time a few years ago while riding down a busy wooded road known for deer. Scanning along the edge of the road I saw several deer coming out of the trees and headed for the road. The lead buck went up to the side of the road, stopped and I swear he looked both ways and hesitated as I and a car going the other way came to almost a dead stop. This buck seemed to make eye contact with both of us and then trotted across the road as nonchalantly as possible with the rest of the herd following. I've had lots of encounters with deer over the years, but nothing even close to what I saw that day.
This was not rutting season and there were not likely any predators in the area, so the herd was not panicking. It's also likely I was just anthropomorphizing what happened, but I have to wonder if, over the years a few deer are beginning to learn about roads and traffic. You'd think the dumbest ones would eventually get culled by natural selection.
Anyway, I'm glad the OP came out of the encounter with nothing but damage to the bike. I'd like to hear the outcome with the insurance company as well. Wing parts are so expensive these days that a total loss number is probably easy to reach.

I agree on the luck factor, in over 500,000 MC miles I've never had a deer strike, but knocking wood as I say this. As for the several electronic whistle companies, none of them are louder than my GL1800's radio when cranked up. I often do that when riding at or near night time, and deer are always on my mind here. There's hardly a day I ride when I don't see at least a couple of them. Agree also, worst time is Oct-Dec, as they are much more likely to be on the move then, including at dead run. Hopefully my luck will hold, but never know.

You are correct if the numbers get to 70% or maybe even higher, I do not understand why every one thinks it is so easy to total, for all that really want to know call your agent and ask them what % of the value of the vehicle does it take to total your car, bike or what ever and post it here you will see, State Farm fix my 2015 Abs bike and it had $14,700 in damage and if you think you will muscle your insurance company around you will see, and that was $200 away from being totaled and I call the state insurance commissioner and they told me it was the company's call.

There is a lot of truth in what you say, but that’s the point where you argue with the insurance company for value of the motorcycle before the crash versus post crash. In other words will you get the same amount of money for it being crash free compared to a bike that had 70% of the value repaired or replaced. Sometimes you have to take off the gloves get tough or get a lawyer.

No disrespect to you but when you tell them you are going to get a lawyer the only thing they will say is we will be looking to hear from him, they do this hundreds or maybe a thousand times a day they know the rules and when you tell the attorney what you wish to do if he is true to you he will tell you he will take the case but it will be slim chase of winning, and as I said call your company and ask what % does it take to total your vehicle, and that is the only real way you will know what will happen in the event that you need to file a claim.

Back a few years ago, on my way to work at around 5:15 am in early October I hit a small racked 10 pointer dead center when it jetted across in front of an oncoming car to my left. It unfortunately beat the car but not me going the opposite direction. Was still cruising about 75 on impact as it happened so fast I never even had time to chop the throttle. Bike was a Kawasaki Vulcan 750, and suffered a fair amount of damage. I repaired the bike, and it rode well, but I never felt the same about that one and sold it. I tried really hard but couldn’t get comfortable with that bike afterward. Replaced it with a new 2007 Yamaha FZ6. Now, that was an awesome machine right there!

My experience is that you don’t see the one the you hit. Still only have a memory of a ghostly/shadowy brown torso just to the right of center. Almost cut it in two. Destroyed the bike, and I got 15 basketball sized bruises for 2 weeks, from my tumble on the ground, from 60 mph to zero.
